I just finished a round trip ride (1K miles each way) and my "new" metzler rear tire looks like I have been smoking 'em. Now I say "new" but I guess I have put about 6k miles on them in the past 2 months. I still haven't hit the TWI but there is a definite flat spot in the center of the tire (where I did all my riding) and some of the rubber seems to have collected on the surface (like after doing a burnout). My previous tires were Dunlops and they didn't seem to wear the same way. Is that what people see/experience as normal wear with their Metzlers?
Guess I shouldn't ride as much if I don't want to be changing tires every few months... yeah right
If you plan on doing most of your riding pounding the slab, perhaps you should consider a tire with a different compound. The ME880s (assuming that's what you have on) are a significantly softer compound than your stock Dunlops and will wear faster. If you've put on 6K in 2mos I'm thinking you are doing mostly straight line riding on the freeway. That kind of riding will put a narrow wear patch down the center of the tire on most compounds. Try riding on the SIDES some!
Yeah, locally, that is how I ride, but the past couple of months with the weather the way it has been I have been taking some long rides (500 miles a day) and it doesn't lend itself to too much perimeter wear...
They are ME880's and they look real nice, but I guess you are right I have to decide how much money I want to spend on tires and what kind of riding am I going to do mileage-wise.
Great sticky tires always wear out faster. Thats why I choose the happy medium and stay with the Dunlops.
Metzlers and Avon do give you superior grip but are not long lived.
Good Year Eagle series auto tires are the same way. Great grip, expensive and wear out fast.

This is normal for most softer compound tires, collects on the tire if you don't ride them to the edges. Its no problem, however, it is still rubber. You will often see these little bits of rubber piled up on the side of road race tracks.
