Default Speedometer and starting issues...

Hi,
I have an 08 fat bob with the HD black speedometer...the first black speedo I had was defective and kept draining the battery. The dealer ordered a brand new speedo and installed it. The battery doesn't drain anymore but after an hour or so of riding if I stop and turn the bike off (like to fill up with gas) and then turn the ignition back on the speedometer clock resets to 1200 and instead of the clock showing it shows the odometer. Then the bike barely starts and runs rough for a while. A couple of times it was a rough start and a couple of times it almost didn't start. The dealer can't figure out what is wrong...any ideas? I have checked the battery leads and everything is secure...no loose connections. They also replaced the battery so that is brand new as well.
Anyone else ever heard of this issue?

Cheers,
Mickey

Your dealer should have a Tech smart enough to chase a current draw. Put an ammeter in series with your positive battery lead (between + battery post and red battery cable, ignition switch OFF, alarm not enabled) and see if there's a load. If so, start pulling fuses until the load goes away...that will tell you what circuit is draining your battery. Check your wiring diagram in your manual and depending on the complexity of the offending circuit, you may be able to nail down a particular component within it using the same technique.

WOW brilliant!I hope I remember that procedure. Your clock /spedo issue sounds like the led back-up battery must be dead or the retaining paper not removed for it to keep re-setting like that , howevs, I don't know how that could effect your engine Unless there is a back-up for the ecm and it keeps re-setting too.

The tech at the dealer said that the speedo is directly connected with the start up of the bike...so if there is a problem with the speedo then there could be start up issues et al...i'm not a techie at all so I have no idea.
Thanks for the tips....gonna take it to the dealer one more time.

Hey guys (I know this is an old thread) but I've had a similar issue with my Street Bob. My batter would run down so I had to unplug the speedo and it is fine but Im running without a speedo for now. Is this a common problem? Is there a recall on Harley speedos? Seems kinda crappy to have to buy a new speedo for my bike that is only a couple of years old.

They replaced my speedo and the problem was bit better but still there. They never were able to get to the root of the problem. I ended up trading it in on the streetglide, so I never found out what the problem was.

Thanks. This has been a frustrating problem. I may try replacing the speedo and see if that helps. Hate to spend money on parts without knowing.
