Default noob question... low rider/superglide/wide glide

all. pardon my noob-ness. i ride a shadow and am hankering to upgrade in the next year. been really itchin towards one of these 3 models.

they seem rather similar to my untrained eye.

low rider - similar to SG but lowered rear
super glide: mid controls
wide glide: forward controls, raked out, wider front end.

am i close? what's preferred for taller riders (6'2" - 190lbs)

They are all similar whether your eye is trained or not. They are all from the dyna line and have the same frame and engine. Any of them can be modified to fit you whether you are short, average, or tall. They all have a little different style and features but are very similar in many ways. The super glide is the entry level dyna while the wide glide, street bob, fat bob, lowrider, and super glide custom all have some bling and features already added from the factory.

Like the super glide but want the lower rear end on the lowrider, swap out the shocks, it's that simple. And so on...

I went with the Street Bob. I've changed so much on it I probably should have saved some money and got the SuperGlide instead. You can't go wrong with any of them, they're all Dyna's.

Hah! Everybody point and laugh at the noob!

Lol just kidding my friend. You are either gonna wanna go with a Wide Glide, or put forward controls on a different Dyna. And a side note, I don't know if you're aiming for a brand new one or not (I hope not because the Low Rider wasn't included in the 2010 line-up), but all the 2010 Dyna's have lowered shocks already. That's probably one of the reasons they didn't release the the Low Rider this year. Just a guess.

Anyway, I'm 5'10" and I had to have forward controls. If you're shooting for a new one, the Wide Glide is the way to go. It used to be one the more expensive Dyna's; however, since it's absence last year and it's return this year the body is not the only thing that received an overhaul. The price received one as well, a rather tempting one at that. You can get a Wide Glide for around 15 now.

If you're looking at older models, the Low Rider and Wide Glide will be on the expensive side of the spectrum, while the Super Glide is the entry level Dyna. I went with the Low Rider, but that is one of three Harley's that have always been on my bucket list. The Super Glide is listed as a blank canvas to customize.....but in reality, you end up customizing any bike.

You can get great pre owned bikes right now it this economy for great prices. Keep an eye on craigslist in your area and some of the cycle trader type publications....you'd be surprised what you can come up with (many times with all the add on's you can possibly want already done to the bike). Good luck on your search.

Oh yeah, I went with the wide glide myself (though at 5'5" tall it wasn't for the fact that I was too tall for a low rider....lol...I have actually done some things to make me more able to reach the controls)

oh trust me!!! everytime my girl catches me on the computer, i'm on craigslist, ebay and cycletrader. she thinks i'm obsessed. i've seen some good deals on dynas.

since most folks won;t allow a demo ride, i may wait until HD has some local demo days that i can actually ride a couple. i also sorta secretly want a STC, but they are way more, and i doubt i'll have the scratch.

basically want somethign 10+ yrs or less, less than 10K on the odo and relatively stock.

my biggest worry about going HD is worrying about theft. no one will steal my Shadow.

To me its about looks. All the bikes are similar enough. The main differences would be like you said the wide glide with the wider, raked out forks and also the different rear fender. The thing with the superglide is the silver engine color and the handlebar mounted speedo which some people don't care as much for. The lowrider is like the superglide except for obviously it sits a bit lower, tank mounted speedo and a bit more chrome from the factory. Most people are gonna end up customizing their bike anyway but those are some of the main differences which would be more expensive to change.

Edit : I know its hard not to buy one, I had no intention of buying another bike the day I rode out with my new superglide but If the softail is really what you want maybe just ride the shadow for just a little while longer until you can afford the one you want. Not that you can't always upgrade later but it would be cheaper.
