Default pre-2006 dynas

In another thread I started, I was told to avoid the 2006 dynas because they had some issues with the stator and the bearings.

I am considering going as far back as a 2003. Are there any common issues on the 2005, 2004, and 2003 models?

Thanks!

they dont have the 6 spd trans,49 mm forks, better frame, closed loop efi, bigger oil pump, hydraulic chain tensioners, automatic primary chain tensioner,46 mm throttle body, wider rear tire, better flowing heads with beehive valve springs, and i"m sure there are somethings i missed that the 06 up has . otherwise i guess the 05 back bikes are ok.

I bought my '02 Wide Glide in '02, no problems ever. I just had it out the entire day yesterday.

based on the commonly reported inner primary bearing and stator problems in the 06 model - I can't imagine why anyone would take the risk with this year? sure there are a lot of solid 06 out there - but these are potentially serious and costly issues - personally I would avoid this year unless I knew the bike or owner - but that's just me.

the dynas went all FI in 06. some 04-05 had FI, some had carbs.
because of the carb/fi changes from 03 to 04, the 04-05 models are kind of the bastard children and have seat fitment issues becasue of the tank change (the seats only fit 04-05).

due to valve seal changes - it's been suggested that some 05 tc88 motors have leaky valve seals - causing oil consumption. based on my experience - I believe this to be accurate.

have not read much negative on the 03 or 04 models. I'd guess that an 03 carbed is identical to an 04 carbed with the exception of tank and seat fitment as previously mentioned.

As far as the 06+ frames being "better" - ive seen this written several times and i'm not buying in - how is this measured? by the thickness of the tubes? the frames are actually quite comparable.

I was originally looking for a earlier 2005 or older Low Rider, then the 2006's came out with a lot of upgrades that out weighed getting a earlier bike. I had the inner primary bearing go out around 6,000 miles and a speedometer developed a mind of its own around 12,000 miles (both were under warranty). I'm now at 20,000 miles with no other problems. Still have no regrets. Some of the upgrades that I remember below:

New 49 mm forks
New stiffer beefer frame
New 29 degree fork angle/29 degree steering head angle
New stiffer swing arm
New one-inch diameter front and rear axles
New 160 mm rear tire
New 17" rear wheel
New silver 10-Spoke Cast Aluminum wheels
New single floating front brake rotor

New 6-speed
New quieter helical-cut gears
New easy pull clutch
New primary chain automatic tensioner

New wrap-around rear fender
New refined seat
New battery cover
New electrical cover
New headlight, etc.

Sequential-port electronic fuel injection now standard equipment
New higher-flow oil pump improved scavenging
Oil-filter and oil-cooler adapters have been integrated
New engine cases, oil passages are now incorporated into the redesigned engine-transmission interface
Cam plate redesign brings new plain bearings for the camshaft
New roller chain with a new hydraulic chain adjuster

I have 2000 carb model...starts every time and is a kick to ride. Sure they've made improvements over the past 10 years but I like mine just fine.

I have an '06 Wide and I love it. I've had my IPB go twice; first under warranty (HD replaced bearing/race), 2nd time outside warranty (HD upgraded my IPCase and Tranny case with doweled '07-style cases). Had them closely inspect my rotor both times; OK. I think the other improvements listed above outweigh the rotor & IPB "risks". MoCo as much as admitted a design problem with their pink letter "Addendum To Owner's Manual", and mention of it in a call to Milwaukee Customer Service seems to pave the way to free IPB repairs, should you have a problem.

If you're still scared off the '06's, go with an '07. My $.02.

I got an 02. Customized though with 49mm wide glide front end, tank, fenders, motor, etc. Love my carb. And I believe the 02's were the last to have timkin bearings. Maybe 03.

I've never had any trouble at all with mine.
