Guys, don't the 06 and up dynas already have the upgraded chain tensioner?
They have the auto chain tensioner but they upgraded the part for 2007 I believe. Mudd has a post on the changes. In short the teeth on the at least early 06's run the whole length and the shaft is prone to bend leaving the lock function inop. The newer design is thicker and only has teeth at the two ends vs full length.

don, the early 06 tensioner is a piece of crap
pix below. I ran the early for 8-10 thousand hard miles...
pretty serious tweak to the original.
.
.
below,
.......the tensioner on top is part # 39929-06A .. late 06 and up
.......original equipment also shown 39929-06 ... early 06 on the bottom

.
above, and the two pix below,
you see the -06A component is considerably beefed up.

Mud, does this mean that I only can use this one (HARLEY AUTOMATIC PRIMARY CHAIN TENSIONER 40063-05A) for my FXD2003 and that the quality of this one is as bad as the 39929-06?

Mud (for reference), and everyone else that wants to upgrade the manual tensioners to Automatic.
The 40063-05a has the new tensioner used in 39929-06a, along with a bracket that bolts up to the inner primary. Really nice setup. just make sure its the 05a. Theres a lot of the original upgrades, 40063-05 out there, that are being pawned off as the new kit, and they aint.
Thanks Mud for your research in this. It saved a couple of friends a lot of hate and discontent.
I've been thinking of switching my chain primary drive to belt drive--not the 3" open belt drive--but, a 1-1/2" belt drive inside the stock primary cover (not for show but performance). I understand there are some benefits to belt drive. You'll never have to worry about an oil leak from your primary again!
Looking at BDL part number EVB-2SL ... I was informed (by BDL customer service) it would be the correct P/N for late model Dynas. I saw it in Jireh catalog (Jireh P/N 58-331) for $459.

That's the answer I was looking for; thanks for this info and the heads up, Larry!
Trying to find some info on the chain tensioner I found this article:
