front end clunk
Had to remove the bars and lay them back on the tank to get a socket on the steering head nut, I removed the chrome cap and grabbed the steering head nut with my fingers and it moved! It was completely loose, not even finger tight.
It has almost 5K on it now, bought this spring with 1300 miles on it. The steering head nut is torqued to 80 ft lbs, I can't believe it worked loose so that means some idiot left it loose. I took it for a 1K service after I bought it to be certain it was done. Makes you wonder what you are paying the "pros" for!
I guess I will do my own service, planned to anyway but didn't have a service manual at the time.
I have a friend who had the clunk, took it to the dealer to have the work (per the service bulletin) done. Got it home, he still had the clunk. I went to check it for him, removed the stem cover, and the nut on his was also finger tight.
+1 one on self servicing these things.
I went in to pick up oil and filter and the parts guy went into this song and dance about how important it is to have the "pros" do the service since the spokes need adjusted and all the important fasteners that need to be checked over and how the warranty might be affected. I didn't have a manual and they were out of stock, but that is the first accessory I bought.
This being my first HD I had a little learning curve. I worked on all my other bikes and have wrenched on about everything from semi's to bicycles over the last 30 years.
Lucky for me they performed two services for me that day.... My first and also my last.
