Default Time to Install..

Just got a quote for installing cams. 6 1/2 hours with cutting the push rods. I have been trying to decide if I can do this myself. It seems to me that is long on the hours. Anyone that has done this can tell me how long?

If that's the bike i'm looking at, shouldn't take over 2-3 hours depending on your skill level and tools if you use bolt cutters to cut pushrods. No special tools except for a torque wrench and someway to hold lifters up are required on the newer cam setup unless you change inner cam bearings(optional). I can take it apart and put it back together 3 times in 6 1/2 hours. That's ridiculous. The stock inner bearings on the newer design are ok if you don't go crazy with a high lift cam or something. I changed them on mine but i already had a cam bearing puller/installer and they are cheap.

first set i changed took 3 hrs, now usualy 2 to 2 1/2. you can lift the rear of the tank without taking it off to pull the rocker arms and save the pushrods and the 150 dollar adjustables still takes about 3 hrs.

That sounds about right. For someone who has never done it before and leaves in the middle of the job for a burger and beer at the local bar then comes back, takes a nap and then finishes the job.

It really isn't that hard to DIY IF you have done similar projects before. Remember, read the service manual and do alot of research. If after you read up and still feel ok doing it, I would say you will be ok.

Remember, you can always turn to the net for answers.
