I'm not askin which is better. But I've had my night train for a little over a year now, and don't get me wrong I love it. But the DL has just grabbed me, and I was thinkin of tradin my train for one. My question is has anybody made a similar switch and where you happy wit hit? My train dosn't have much vibration, but will I really care?
just lookin for opinions, thanks
Cannot make that direct comparison. I have an AIH Outlaw besides the Bob which is really just an Evo Softtail, so there are some vibrations there (the blueprinting helped to lessen that tho). The Dynas 88A motor will shake at lower revs (sitting at lights, etc.) but then smooth out. The 88B motors do not really ever. It is noticeable, but then most of your cruising will be at speed where the vibes aren't bad.
Owned a 1999 Nightrain for 5 years and before that a 79 FLH shovel. Current ride is a 06 35th Dyna.
Can't make the direct comparison because it was an EVO Nighty (and '79) were ridged mount and the vibration didn't bother me on those but the rubber mount on the dyna's are smooth-smooth-smooth at speed and shake enough at idle to let you and others know this is a Harley.
For me, it came down to the complete package when it was time to buy. The light clutch, slick shiftin' 6 speed tranny and beefy redesign all adds up to a very different feeling bike then HD made just a few years ago.
My most recent Softail was a Heritage Classic and immediately before that a Standard. Compared to my '06 FXDCI the most obvious difference is the unbalanced Dyna motor. I like the shaking, though. Something about a motor with personality. The other difference is the handling. The Softails are low, by design, and with the forward controls they can't lean much before scraping parts. The Superglide has a lot more clearance and does not seem to generate that hinged in the middle feeling you get on a Softail. I like them both. Go with your gut.
Hey what is a scoot without a bit of shake rattle and roll. I have only ever noticed the Bob vibrate when sitting still and even then it is not a concern. Very smooth when riding and compared to a Heritage Classic - roughly the same.
Good point on the ground clearance. I used to think scraping the forwards was just something you had to live with when I had a softail. I don't think I've scraped my forwards al all on my 06 Dyna. Not nitpicking the softail at all, just pointing out a difference.
I think the handling of the Dyna's is good by HD standards but it might be overblown a bit. I mean the ground clearance is good, seat relatively low, good suspension travel but you still get some chassis hinging during medium speed transistions. It has got to be slight play in the swingarm to transmission pivot which makes the rear sometimes slow to react.
For me, I love 'em all. Getting tougher and tougher to decide which bike to buy. You can bet some of the features of the '06 Dyna's will make their way to the softails and the baggers just might just get 95 inches for 07. Next model year should be exciting!

thanks for the input fellas. I never thought I'd ever think about switching out my night train! so many models to choose from!!! I better wait and see what comes out in 07' though, it's just around the corner & I don't wanna be kicking myself. In the mean time I can ride my dads 06 FXDI or my wifes 1979 shovelhead lowrider.
