2. When you do wash it, use a good quality automotive / motorcycle wash product. I use Zaino Z-7 Show Car Wash (www.zainostore.com) myself. Search this forum for zaino to learn more about opinions on Zaino products.
3. Buy a set of top-quality, white American made 100% cotton towells for drying AND washing your bike. Colored towels can leave dye residue. Wash the towels in liquid detergent before using, and rinse twice to make sure all debris is is removed. Don't use powdered soap because it can leave rough particles in the towel that can sctratch your paint. Use a seperate towel for your tins, a seperate towel for chrome, and yet another more generic towel for the frame and other areas that get a lot of road grime / grease / oil on them. If you drop the towel you're using for tins or chrome, it's done: no more bike washing duties for it! Why risk scratching your paint or chrome with micro debris the towel picked up from the ground when it fell? Of course, wash in the shade and dry promptly so that water spotting doesn't occur. When drying, use forward and back motions, not circular ones which can lead to swirling.
4. Before waxing your bike, use a clay bar on it (Zaino Z-18 for example) to remove contaminants that will scratch it during the polishing / waxing process. Do you think this is excessive? Consider this: all your tins are directly in the air stream that passes over your frotn brakes, which washes a nice steady stream of very abrasive brake dust over them. Using a clay bay removes those particles and prevents scratching.
5. Carefully follow the manufacturer's instructions for whatever polish / wax product you use. I use Zaino Z-2 Pro Show Car Polish. The Zaino site has some good tips for achieving excellent results.
If you're paint is excessively swirled, you may need to use a good commercial polishing product designed to remove swirl marks. Zaino Z-5 Pro is their offering.
With a careful approach to caring for your finish (like abolittle care and time, with Zaino products you can get your black bike looking "wet". Here's an example pic from a Sportster I used Zain on. I just sold the bike minutes ago.
Good luck!

Your going to like this stuff on a dark finish. Will make you think you can just stick you hand right into the paint.
