This is my first Harley. I always heard there were tricks to quite a lot of the mechanic work. I need to know what the trick is to installing new exhaust gaskets. The gasket is too big to fit in the head and too small to slip over the pipe. Even if you center them up and think you will squish them in with nuts and stud, there is not enough stud to know for sure that you will not cross thread the nut on the stud. I would think that the gasket has to fit in the head or on the pipe. I have an FXDB '09. ANY HELP WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED. Right now I have the gaskets in the freezer hoping to contract them enough to slip them in the head. Am I on the right track or still lost?
Did you get the old ones out first? I only ask as it took me forever to even notice that they were installed. Also did you get the regular replacement ones or the SE ones, the SE's are about a 1/3 of the size and recommended for V&H pipes.

Assuming you're talking about the standard gaskets, and you've already removed the old ones, mine were a little tight going in too.
By the time I'd applied enough pressure to get the new ones started I had mushed the edges just a little bit. And that's just pressing with my fingers, they're really soft. But once they get started, resistance seems to drop off, just the initial getting the leading edge in was a pain.
gaskets should go right in man, not makeing it fit. i think you got the wrong gaskets there. i always use the stock ones over SE, gaskets are gaskets IMO...
ooh ya! with as cheap as they are i replace mine after every time the pipes are off the bike!
