OK. Bike is an 09 FXDL with 1400 miles and just had it's fircst service. It runs fine as well. I put on a set of Rush 1.75 slipons a couple of weeks ago. I finally had a chance to give them a good workout this weekend. I am hearing a noise that “sounds” like pinging, but I am sure that is not it because I hear it on acceleration and well as deceleration. I hear the new rumble of the mufflers as well as a metalic type noise.
When I got off the bike and took off my helmet, I twisted the throttle right next to the pipes and I don’t hear that noise. I could not feel any exhaust leak at the header pipes either. The bike runs fine and I did not hear this noise with the stock pipes. Could it be part of the normal exhaust noise from the Rush mufflers? Any wisdom would be appreciated.
I put the same Rush 1.75 on my 2010 Heritage and I heard what I believe is the same thing you hear but it went away after I put some miles on it. So I believe it was the new slip ons 'breaking in' if you can call it that.
Ride a few more hundred miles and see if it goes away.
If it's like a dull metallic thud in the medium range sort of like tapping repeatedly on a metal pipe at high speed, then it is normal because I heard that with my rush 1.75's which are now collecting dust in the shed. Not that I didn't like the sound of the rush, and i would put them back on if I ever get rid of my full system, but that was the only turn off for me with those rush slip-ons. However I never thought it was worth mentioning and just accepted them for what they are.
I had a noise I couldn't find that happened under the same circumstances. It turned out to be the metal strap on the inside of the rear fender (both sides). It's the gold strap that is used for guiding the taillight wires and mounting the fender to the struts. I just took them off and put some double sided tape on re-installed and it's all gone. Hopefully, it that simple, but that what mine was!!
Similar noise here that I initially suspected was ping or knock, but after close to 9k miles put on, I've just attributed it to noisy valves. I put Rush 2" slipons and a tank lift on back when the bike was pristine with only ~25 miles, so it was hard for me to have a basis of comparison if it was the exhaust/ecm, tanklift, or some combo thereof. Can you tell where the sound it coming from, i.e. under the tank, the rear of the bike/exhaust outlets etc...?
