Question Stock muffler mods

I know I've seen a few threads on drilling out baffles, knocking out plugs etc., but I can't find them now. Want to give my 09 FXDC a little more sound. Can't go for new exhaust right now. Thanks, Tog

I ran a rebar thru slips from behind, sound improved, but didn't like sound.
Look for used Screaming Eagle II slips on ebay, part # xxxxx-99, got mine for $46 shipped, save OEM slips for trade in or new owner.

You're going to need either a 6" drill bit extension or a 12" long bit. Pick the size you want but I went with a 1/2" and they have a bit more sound without being loud. If you want to knock out the plug, I can't remember the size you need but for some reason a doorknob hole saw sounds familiar.

Just make sure you pull the mufflers off the bike to do the drilling and you'll also want to blow out the shavings with air.

There are a couple ways to do this. You can bash something through it, you can drill through it or you can gut the muffler. If you just go after the plug you will most likely be disappointed with the sound, it really doesn't change it that much. If you gut it you will definately notice a difference. I have done it both ways out of shear boredom. If you chose to drill the plug in the center of the baffle you can do a hole anywhere from 1/4" to 1 1/4" which is the way I went. If you dont like it there is enough of the plug left that you can block it back off with two washers and a bolt (you can see the bolt in this picture).

I used a 2 1/8" hole saw to gut a different set of mufflers that I had. It did leave behind the outer mesh that had the packing in it which made for a nice deep exhaust note. I ran the bike like this with out a tuner or any other mods for quite a while before I bought pipes, cams, aircleaner and PC3.

Hope this helps.

I did both on my FXDF, 1st I pulled out the baffles, removed the fiberglass wrap off ea (or whatever its made of) and punched a big hole in the center plate. That sounded pretty good especially after I installed a Big Sucker and installed a PCIII usb. Ran real good that way too. About 3 months later I full gutted the pipes and adjusted PCIII map to suit, it was great, and ran good too, but you have to have a tuner to do that right on a late model efi bike. Later I put the TH on and then wrapped it to get the sound and performance I have now. I kinda miss the sound of those open pipes, they set off carr alarms a block away, but.. the TH was a definite performance boost-Good luck whatever you do.
