Default Head/cam question

My local dealership (yes...I know) is running a special. You buy $250 dollars or more in parts, free install.

Now, my plans were to do heads/cams next year. I had picked out some headwork by Dewey and was going to run the Andrew 37H cams.

However, with this deal would it be worth having the dealer throw in some SE cams for free labor and have the heads done later on? (I know I have read that the aftermarket cams like Andrews out perform SE cams...but retaining my warranty for now is important)

For mods right now...I have SE stage 1 AC, PCV and Rinehart 2-1 exhaust. I was after the right head/cam combo to put me right in the 100/100 range on horses/torque......

can the SE cams with good head work do this? Which SE cams would be a good choice? I want a strong mid range (which is why I had chose the 37H's before).

Thoughts? I do my own work usually and was looking forward to tearing my motor down myself, but free labor and warranty retention would be pretty darn good IMHO!

The 204 is close to a 37 advanced 4 degrees, not a bad cam at all.

I just bought the new 259e cams on the recommendation of the guy that is going to do my 103" build. They are essentially 251 cams (I think I remember that correctly) changed a bit to take advantage of the EFI motors. I can get the specs to you if you want, but I have not seen a dyno chart on these cams yet.

That BTW, if they let you do it, is an astounding deal. I asked the local dealer what he'd charge for just changing the cams out: 5.5 hours @ $70 per hour=$385! They must really be slow.

I don't how good Dewey's head work is,but in order for you to reach your goal using SE cams your head work has to be great.I personally like Dan Baisley myself.I know you could reach your target using his heads.Give him a call let him set you up with some pro street heads & a SE 211 or Andrews eqivalent,or a Woods.Raise the compression & your target is met.Now what about the bottom end??? If you go with Dewey, your still going to have good head work & a comp raise.I would think your CCP needs to be in the 190ish corrected in order to achieve your goal.A great tuning device will help also.I don't know if the PC V is up to the challenge!!!

Talk to your dealer about using the Andrews cam. The way high performance installs work with a warranty is completely up to the dealer.
My dealer installed the cams I purchased through Andrews, the heads I had done by a local machine shop, the cylinders and pistons I bought from a Canadian dealer on closeout, the gaskets I bought from Chicago H-D and.... warranted the work and the build.

I was always told; you don't get what you don't ask for.

Specs on the 259's would be great. Thanks! I agree, the local dealer is SLOW right now, great deals and yeah..the labor savings is what has my interest peaked about doing the SE cams.

As for head work...I had made up my mind on Dewey based on his work done a few people's heads with great results. I am however, open to other builders for my head work. If I need better head work to get to my goal with the SE cams...so be it. Not sure of the differences in builders.

The bottom end I was hoping would hold with cams/head work. Maybe not?

As for tuning...I was thinking of dumping my PCV for a TTS anyway. I want to be able to tune it myself........

Don,

Your numbers are my inspiration for what I was originally going for.

however, I'm hoping to reproduce that with SE cams if I can't get the dealer to put in the Andrews...

Jason, if you go with the 54s over the 37s you should reach the 100/100 club as long as you get a good tune
