I don't know about micro printing on bike parts........but I as a gal, I DO KNOW FOR SURE, every modern diamond currently sold is now etched with a unique number on it's outer edge called ( also called the "girdle") to help ID gems that have been stolen and resold to dealers.
Being in the motorcycle security business, I always take an interest in these threads. It's interesting to see how opinions vary - "let em have it, it's insured". Well, my bike is my bike and I don't want some scumbag taking it away from me. "locks are worthless because MOST thefts occur by lifting the bike into a truck" uh, sorry..not true. We work closely with Insurance companies and actually in the U.S. the majority (like 71% last year) of motorcycle thefts were "ride away or role away".
I agree that if someone wants something bad enough, they'll most likely get it. But that doesn't stop me from locking my car, even though the only thing between a thief and my car is a piece of glass. I still lock my home too, even though it is full of windows. As stated earlier in this thread, layering protection is the best bet and being aware that the threat is there, will help you to take preventive measures.
Having anything stolen sucks. You feel violated and nothing can change that. My bud in Phoenix who rides an 04 WG just had his dodge diesel dually stolen from his driveway two weeks ago. One night they stole JUST the tailgate. The next night they came back for the whole truck. It was found about 90min outside of PHX in the desert and had been rolled.
There was a case years ago in my hometown (Hawthorne, NJ) where some kids from a few towns away had come and were in the process of stealing a car. The owner claimed to have fired two warning shots into the air then shot the (moving) car. He killed the 17yo passenger. The guy went to jail for murder. The media tried every angle to convict that guy...claiming he was part of the aryan group because he had a rebel flag inside his house. One has nothing to do with the other.
I'll remember that night forever. One of my riding buds was on the volunteer FD and he heard the call over the radio which he carried with him all the time. The 17yo died about 100yds away in the parking lot of the 7-11 in town.
Now, if the kids weren't stealing a car that 17yo would still be alive. I felt no pity for him. He made his choice and accepted the possibilities. BTW, the 17yo was white as was the shooter.

not really on topic here, but we seem to have gotten off topic anyway...
i drive a jeep wrangler with a soft top and NEVER lock my doors. even if my doors were locked and the rear hatch was locked, anyone with a pocket knife can break into my car.
but i KNOW i just know that the day my car gets broken into, the idiot that does it is going to smash my window before he ever checks the door hahaha
Silent Alarm with pager, .40SW and Pit Bull. Pit Bull gets loose onto them, the .40SW is in case they try to hurt the Pit Bull.
I caught a guy inside a buddies truck, grabbed him and helped him to the ground (no not easily at all), called the cops. The police showed up and the head officer was a buddy, he looked at me and said he is a juvenile and they have no room at juvy for him so they are going to release the punk. So he told me maybe next time explain to the punk why this is not a good thing to do and let him go, that is if he can walk or is awake.
