Funny I stumbled across this thread. I recently bought a brand new '09 FXD, and saved over $1600 by doing that.

The only difference I could find was the 5th gear change, and the tires. The alleged issues with the 5th gear "whine" don't bother me, and I wasn't going to pay $1600 more for different tires.

I have to agree here. Take a real close look at the speedo and the engine.
Things that are hard or expensive to change.
Other things like tires your gonna be changin anyway...bars/pegs etc...are stuff you will likely want to modify to make it your own...so concentrate on what you want in as a 'base model' as that can't be modified easily.
