End of this thread...Well it turned out to be a $242.41 nail in my tire. What was unusual was that the nail was in the tire HEAD First. Thanks to all for their responses.
Damn, that sure makes me glad I got the extended warranty with road hazard coverage.
None of the indys here (Jonesboro) stock or have any experience with cycle tires. The HD dealer here is really great, so even if it costs a few bucks more, I try to give them my support. BTW your bike looks great!!
I know you've already solved this problem but I thought I'd toss this into the convo since these threads are searched by others with similar problems. If you're running laced wheels then you probably have tubes in them. As long as the whole is small enough and hasn't created roughness on the inner surface of the tire that you can't clean up, you can get away with just installing a new tube. That's what my local dealership did to fix the flat on my old Sportster. It's a heck of a lot cheaper than installing a new tire *and* tube.
New poster. Would rather read than write. However......
'06 Dyna with laced wheels, 2200 miles on major Florida highways, no construction near home. Second Harley, third bike.
Three flats: one front, two rear. Front and first rear were nails, sudden, at speed. Trust me, it's way scarier to have the front go flat while riding. Managed not to dump the bike either time(thanks Riders Edge/Polk County Highway Cops).
Road and tire hazard warranty.
The first flat- front tire/tube were replaced at 150 miles. Minor charge.
Second flat- (first rear) was towed to HD stealer closer to home. They wouldn't honor warranty from stealer I purchased bike at. Hence just a tube replacement for $50.
Third flat- (second rear) not repaired yet. Occured two weeks after having the tube replaced. Bike sat for a week in the garage. Came out to have a cigar and talk to the bike, and noticed the tire was flat. For warranty repair the bike must be towed to the further HD stealer where I purcased it, which triggers a premium charged by the tower.
If I must replace the rear tire, should I upgrade to the 180 mm package? Should I consider dumping the laced wheels? Tire blow out is not a relaxing thought while pursuing an activity that's supposed to lower my stress level.
Glad to see you had the tire replaced. Here are links to what happened to someone I know that had a rear tire blowout. He had also just had the tire replaced 12 days prior to the accident, so I suspect faulty tire/tube or not installed correctly. He spent 3.5 weeks in hospital, but is at home recovering now.
My friend that works at an indy shop gets his tires at a crotch rocket dealer for $100 installed and balanced, and thats for a Dunlop aeromax which looks bada$$. You have to take the wheel off yourself to get that price though. I have about 6,300 miles on my bike and the back tire is pretty worn, i figure i'll need a new one between 8k-10k.
