Default Stage 1 opinions

I just finished up with the stage 1 air filter kit on my bike and called the dealership to get it in for the new download and to get it serviced... The service guy tells me that with the new pipes and air filter kit that it needs a SEST, or some kind of fuel management... I have read and read different opinions on this and even spoke to someone from the forums that makes a living doing stuff like this... Several people have said with the mods I have made I only need the download done? I could see needing some sort of fuel management system I put the entire stage 1 kit on it, ie: cylinders, pistons and cams and what not... I am just wondering if the dealership is trying to sell me the tuner and dyno time... Any info is much appreciated..

Isn't the SEST like $400 and non-transferable between bikes?

I was just making sure. I'm sure it's a fine product but for me, portability to another bike is a factor in buying something like that.

Kyfatbob I'm dealing with the same issue as you since I just installed a stage 1 filter to go with my cycle shack slip ons. I've read numerous threads on this forum and others and I talked to the tuner at the Moco here. He told me with the mods I've done that the download is not necessary. He said your not going to melt down your motor or damage your bike. What I've done is pulled my plugs now and looked at them and I'm gonna make a ride and pull them again to see how they look. I don't see blowing $150 up a wild ducks a$$ if it's not necessary.

Default Stage 1

I went through the same thing on my new bike last year. The dealer told me it would be fine to pull the baffles, however, upon further investigation I talked to a guy that said he's seen fuel injected bikes come into his shop shooting fuel out of the exhaust. The download sucks, the SERT is expensive and is only able to work on that bike. I did pipes, heavy breather, and PCV. The ad at the top of the screen for Fuel Moto is where I went. They come preloaded to your pipe and intake, have an extra year warranty and you can put it on your next bike. My bike runs better than factory with it. I believe the guy at Fuel Moto is Jamie.

I've investigated this pretty well before I changed my exhaust and A/C.
What I learned was that the dealer can not legally modify the factory setting of the AFR. That's set at 14.7:1, I believe, and is controlled by the feed back from the O2 sensors in closed loop, where most of us spend 95% of our riding time.
The only real changes that the download makes are to the timing curve and the RPM limit. Why anyone would want a 6500 RPM limit is beyond my understanding considering where the power curve tops out on Harleys.
I was told by the dealer that I had to have the download to protect my warranty, an outright lie, but H-D has said that it isn't needed on the Delphi system.
Better to spend you money on a PCV or T-max including the extra for the autotune.
That is unless you have plenty of cash to spend at the Dynotuner for every little change you make.
I ain't claiming any expertise on these Delphi EFI systems.I'm just passing on my opinion formed on the basis of my own research.

Talking Just went through the same thing

Posted just a couple weeks ago. Wanted to put slip ons on my 2010 streetbob and asked around on this forum for help figuring out if I had to do power commander and air filter upgrade. Hubby and I fought about this for a while. I was told over and over again that I could use SE pipes or 2" Rush pipes and not do anything else. I ordered the Rush pipes and love the sound but I figure with 2 new bikes in our garage, why take the chance and mess with fate. Last night called Fuel Moto and ordered 2 PCII, 2 SE air filters with black backing plates and 1 set of Rush pipes for the mans' 2010 wide glide all for far under $1000 bucks and they'll be here in 3 - 4 days. I have heard so many good things on the forum about these guys I just went for it. Don't have money to throw away on the upgrade but I'd rather throw it not to prevent a problem than make new problem on new bikes by not doing what is right for the very lean running 2010 bikes.
I totally understand your confusion.

I went through this as well.
I decided that the PCV through fuel moto was "my" best solution. I did not intend on upgrading the motor beyond the stage 1 any time soon, perhaps never at this point. It comes with a map that is fit for your pipes and filter etc... so no dyno is needed. Is it optimal, are you getting maximum power output/potential with a canned map and no dyno? I doubt it, but it was all I wanted/needed. My intent was to get the bike to breathe better and run cooler, not max its performance out.

From what I have read on the forum, the PCV is perfect for this application. Other options, ie: sest. tts, sert, do have more flexability, (however they are more expensive). This was a considerable factor for me. But for simply adding the High flow ac and slip ons, I believe the pcv at fuel motos price with the Pre map is "my" best solution.

Good luck,

Cheers,
Tom
