Default Rivets on SE mufflers?

Just got a NOS set of 80258-99a Screamin' Eagle off-road pipes for my 07 FXDB. Box includes two rivet and the installation instructions say to mount the pipes then drill through one of the existing holes in the muffler into the exhaust pipe and attach the pop rivet. This is in addition to the typical OEM HD muffler clamp.

Anyone know anything about this? Why should this be needed? FYI, the same instructions are used for similar pipes on Sportys but the rivets are only used on the Dynas.

Thanks

Its just a extra safety feature to keep them from coming off. While it doesnt happen alot if you do a search you will find some people who have lost there slip-ons going down the raod.

Put them on and torque the bolts. Check them on a regular basis.

You will just cuss when you have to grind or drill them out if you have to remove the SE's.

Thanks, bb. Would never have thought of this having put slipons on several other bikes in the past.

Yeah, wl, that was my thought. But after reading the other thread and reminding myself how the muffs attach (only to the pipes and then to each other - not to the frame) I think this is good insurance. I'm thinking I'll only do the front one, however, to make it easier to drill out if needed in the future.

Thanks

I drilled a small hole in just the top muffler on the top side into the over lap section and ran a short 1/4 inch diameter sheet metal screw into it. It can be backed out when you need to remove the mufflers. I figured that since the mufflers are tied together one screw along with the clamps should keep it all in place.

don't have to pop rivet, just run it thru without popin it, clamp will hold it in place, will work like a retaining pin. Or just torque those clamps to hell.
