Default Fuel filter options?

Today while I was reassembling the tank on my '07 WG I noticed there was still fuel inside the filter area of the pump. I figure what the heck, and take it apart. No time like when it's sitting in my hand to do so.

I was blown away by what I found. The fuel filter had at minimum 1/16" of rust completely encasing the fuel filter.

I wonder how much of that rust made into the motor. The inside of my tank has a few small rust spots but nothing major. I must be getting some horrible gas.

Anyway, my point......

Does anyone know of an automotive / small engine equivalent to the fuel filter on our dynas? I did hit Napa, autozone, advanced auto and even walmart. Wally had some fram fuel filters that were close but no cigar.

It sure would be nice to not have to make the 2+hr round trip to the dealer for JUST a $17 dollar filter. Doesn't that seem a bit excessive? 17 bucks for a little piece of media with plastic on the ends.

you sure they have it?? i had my tank off and was going to replace it and the gasket and all the lines in there and total came to $85 bucks in parts. Guess what not one of the 3 dealers that was owned by the place i stopped had any of the parts and no local dealers had them. Makes me wonder how the hell they are replacing the filters at the 20,000 mile service if they don't stock them....

I guess you're asking if my dealer had it in stock. I don't know because it was monday (yesterday) and all the bike ships in my area are closed on mondays. I was really hoping to find an automotive equivalent. Guess I'll call my dealer and take the ride. Oh well...

Oddly enough, all three auto parts stores I hit carry the dyna oil filter. Yes, they have the chrome in stock. lol

I just did the same thing, one dealer had it and one would have to order it.
You might try checking online with dimensions or a cross reference with FRAM or other filter manufacturers. Surely it is made by one of the major mans.

Hmmm... I can't find a listing for an HD fuel filter anywhere, FRAM, WIX, K&N, AMSOIL, none seem to list one.

Default fuel filter replacement write-up

Vic,

Searching the forum for info on a replacement fuel filter I found this thread:

https://www.hdforums.com/forum/touri...to-w-pics.html

It has a good write-up and pics on this subject; couldn't find an answer if there is a general replacement filter though.....

Rene', I appreciate the info. I don't need to know HOW to change the filter. That was pretty obvious while I had the fuel pump in my hand, removed from the tank.

What I was looking for was a source for the filter other than the dealer. I was hoping to find it at a local auto parts store rather than 45-50miles away or through mail order.

Also, not sure you know but I was looking for the replacement on a monday. That's significant because most bike shops (dealers included) are open on saturdays so they are closed sunday and monday so they too get their 2-day weekend.

On that yahoo answers link, it seems obvious there is no such 3rd party filter replacement that can be found at a local auto parts store. I'll be stuck driving the 45miles to the dealer today and spending ~$50 on a replacement.

The fram G2 filter was pretty close. It was long by about 3/16".

On the advice of 8541hog, I checked the fram website. They have no option for searching fuel filters for h-d. Only cars, trucks and small engines.

I'm going to pay closer attention to that filter in the future. It was so nasty. I wish I had taken a picture of it before spraying it with cleaner for possible reuse.

Wanna laugh?

Part number 61011-04a Fuel filter & o-ring... 2007 Dyna WG.

Dealer #1 - Doug's H-D; Florence, SC - not in stock. Order part on friday (+4 days). Receive part (+7 days) for a total of 11 days to wait for a lousy fuel filter. Cost-$17.00

Dealer #2 - Sandhills Cycle Center; Southern Pines, NC - not in stock. Order part. Receive part (7 days). 7 day waiting period.

Dealer #3 - Charlotte H-D; Charlotte, NC- not in stock. Order part. Receive part (~4 days).

This is really frustrating. A simple fuel filter. Takes up zero space in the warehouse.

The parts guy, Micheal at Charlotte H-D did find one in stock at Beachhouse H-D in Shallotte, NC (north of MB,SC). He said they could probably ups it and you'd have it in a day or so. Rock on, Mike.
