Personally I think the hardware HD uses on their bikes is little better than tinker toy crap. Stripped the head out of a hex head bolt. My fault, like the op, read foot lbs when I should have read in lbs. And on one of my stock detachable bag strips a bracket hex head bolt. Not my fault. Love the bike, love the Harley ride, etc.... But why can't they use some quality nuts and bolts on their product. BTW I use craftsman tools, don't have the $ for snap ons. I also don't like all the zinc they use to secure chrome parts, but I get the money making after market marketing deal on the chrome bolts. Personally I buy any hardware I can from an after market supplier like J&P before I ever think of buying from HD. Hope the Davidson read this.

have to disagree with the first part above.

haven't stripped or broke any of the HD fasteners - that's my experience.

Now on the other hand the Stator/Rotor broke.
(improper fastening of *original* equipment).

and the front motor mount
(I believe this is due to substandard cushioning compound)

dog rings failed
(my fault, abuse of the intended use of the machine)

second part above speaks for itself.

torque values are not always what you see is what you get.
.........a lot of variables are at play.........

stripping out torx or hex heads, usually due to not paying attention,
and/or improper fitment of the tool into the receiver.

Heli-coils used to be standard in every Harley owners tool box.

I don't know. Seems to me a lot of their fasteners are "soft". I'm no expert mechanic, but I'm pretty **** about using sharp well maintained tools and making sure I've seated the tool correctly.

I busted a knuckle or two on engines, bike and cages, from the 50s and 60s. You could put a breaker bar on a bolt head, pile a rail road tie on top of the breaker bar and jump up and down until you twisted a bolt in half. But it was rare to strip the head off. Probably just gettin old and thinking I need to say something like they just don't make em like they use to.

Bones, I do have to agree with you here (to a certain extent).

the second paragraph above for sure.

butt, the first paragraph..............
you previously said you use CraftsMan tools, and that's fine.

butt, *sharp well maintained*
CraftsMan tools is a bit of an oxymoron.

In my opinion,
it is very hard to maintain a tool well if it is not sharp and precise (in the first place).

i was helping a couple friends change the fluids in their softtails last weekend and the very last hole on the fatboy, when i removed the tranny plug a quarter of the threads came out with the plug. talk about sick= first time any of his fluids have been changed, 08 fatboy, lol. worst part was that the hole is up in between the shocks- helicoil wouldnt work, took it to my mechanic and he had to grind it down around the shoulder and retap it and larger plug etc., not the mocos fault for his abuse- but i have never seen threads fall out, thinking maybe it was overtorqued from the factory when it was assembled?

"butt, *sharp well maintained* CraftsMan tools is a bit of an oxymoron."

Ok, fair enough. But at least their not from the dollar store with pink handles.

Where does Husky tools rank? Better than Kobalt? Less or equal to Craftsman?

I've had a lot of craftsman, and to tell you the truth I haven't been that impressed for the price I pay. I think I get similar of better quality with some Husky (home depot) stuff I've got, and it's cheaper.

Thoughts?

That is a very sick feeling. I have done it way too many times myself. I have doubts about my own torque wrench - see my post about Torque wrench testing. I quit using it yesterday because it wouldn' t break even at low settings.
