Default Dyna Clunk Solved!

Well I finally solved the "front end" clunking I was getting sometimes when I went over a railroad track or a good bump in the road. It didn't do it every time which made it even harder to find. I tried everything I had read about a front-end clunk. The dealer checked the fall-away. It was right on. The stem nut was inspected and re-torqued. The forks were inspected and the fork oil was re-serviced. Still the occassional clunk. The front caliper was re-torqued and the disc mount bolts were inspected. The noise sounded like it was coming from the lower triple tree area. I took the bike to a local indy. He asked what all had been done as he inspected all the footpegs to see if they had play in them and then he took it for a ride. When he came back, I asked if he heard it and he said he had. Then he jacked it up and retracted the jiffy stand. He took his fist and hit the jiffy stand between the pivot and the end. We heard a noise. He repositioned the rubber bumper on the frame where the stand rests when retracted. He hit it again. No noise. I took it for a ride over tracks and bumps. No noise. The stand was resting on the rubber pad, it just wasn't where it needed to be. He charged me $10! I'm dropping off a case of beer today.

wow, I'll check mine, I hear a slight clunk when I drive up the dirt road to my work. About 3/4 of a mile. Hear a clunk over the washboard stuff. Thanks!

That's a good bit of info to post as I'm sure that's the cause for others as well.

Just very surprised you've never notice that when raising up the kickstand, it should have been making that clunking sound then

Just had the pipes replaced with Samson BG3 Street Sweepers, New SE Stage 1 and a Dyna tuned SERT. More than anything, was hoping as a result, "The Clunk" would be gone. It's been there since about the 600 mile mark and like you and others have said, not consistent enough for anyone to pin down. I've read about the front end clunk but this one is the one you describe as being in the footpegs. Anyway, thanks to your comment about the side-stand, I checked mine and suspect you've nailed it for me and many others. Just wanted to say thanks.

Kaduku,
That's the strange thing about it. When the stand was retracted the only noise it made was the familiar thump of the stand hitting the rubber bumper. The sound was duplicated by the mechanic hitting the stand along it's length, not near the rubber pad. Something about the way it rested let it rattle until he repositioned it. Anyway, I just road another 60 miles today and the noise is gone.

Yes, he earned the beer. In all fairness, the dealer tried everything they could think of to help me. They told me it wasn't their first complaint of that type of noise on a Dyna. They even said that some customers had reported that their bike stopped making the noise after awhile. Perhaps they had inadvertantly repositioned the rubber pad while cleaning or jacking, who knows. It really was a weird one. It bothered me because it made the bike feel like a lot less than what I paid for. Now it feels and sounds solid on any road. I'm sure it's not everyone's problem, but I hope it helps a few.
