As the solution for ping, as found on this Harley, it very well could be a plug or plug wire issue as many have stated already! Take it to the dealer! He can diagnose why it is detonating.
ION sensed knock control is "model" based. An engine is instrumented with combustion equipment ( to measure actual cylinder pressure). The very onset of detonation can be measured as a pressure rise in the chamber, while at the same time, the "IONIZATION" as experienced at the plug during detonation, can be recorded and "MAPPED" vs. the sensor output in the coil. Those "values" are then used to retard spark based on those values. An incorrect plug gap or plug wire issues can affect those sensor values and as a result fail to "read" detonation. All "knock" systems have areas were knock is more difficult to detect. An ION sensing system is better than at reacting to the very onset of detonation, than a "knock sensor" system. But either system can be fooled into failing to detect!
( plug gaps and/or wires can contribute to improper ION sensor readings in the coil).
What many folks forget or never think about is every "software" function is calibrated. Those MANY calibration values are what make a system work. They also depend on hardware being within a certain tolerance to function correctly. When something skews the system even slightly, the system may not function as designed. A knock system is no different.
My guess is that is happening here. A dealer can quickly figure out if the detection system is working correctly.
At the risk of just adding fuel to the fire, (no pun intended) I would be in the camp that you need something like a TFI fuel management device. There are lots out there but the TFI works good on our Harleys and is easy to install and tune. A TFI fuel management device cures many problems by adding more fuel (only when you twist the throttle and call for it.) Some devices add more fuel all the time and even subtract the fuel at times. The biggest advantage of any fuel management device is that they should give you a cooler running engine at cruising speed.
