Default throttle and grip removal tips? (swapping bars)

2010 superglide--
new bars are due to arrive this week
"SANTEE 1"" WIDE/LOW BARS BLK"
xlx style drag

when i go to take off the throttle and grip from the old bars,
is it just gonna fly everywhere or be fairly easy to swap out?
i didn't get new grips - saving up $$$ for more HP.
any advice or tips to make this easier?
i remember reading about shooting air into the left grip to get it off
and using hairspray to stick it back on.
thanks for any info- Jason

Don't drop the throttle, idle end ball joint thingys, place a towel in the ground just in case, Don't stick gas grip all the way in, it won't turn free touching end of bars.
Left grip pry,pry, pry.
I got pair of OEMs.

You should loosen the throttle idle adjustments to make it easier

This is from another forum. I'm sure it's a fine place but obviously not as cool as here. Anyhoo, found this some time ago and decided to save it.

Since I have yet to replace my grips, obviously (again) I can't vouch for these directions --

When i removed the left side on the stock grips all I had to do was twist, the glue broke free and I pulled it out. I have the stockers on a shelf. The throttle side is a little more complex. HDdyna2006 is right if you loose the brass ferules on the ends on the throttle/idle cables you will have to replace them so do it carefully. I highly reccomend the HD shop manual since you seem to want to do your work yourself.

Here is a very helpful thread from forum member FXD2003Rider You will find a huge amount of helpful info there so be sure and bookmark the page once you have visited! !https://www.hdforums.com/forum/dyna-...-database.html CHEERS WELCOME ENJOY and RIDE SAFE !!!

Good luck getting the left grip off without tearing it up, but hey it might happen. I'd go ahead and invest in some new grips if it were me. You can get some nice grips at a decent price if you stay out of a stealer shop (read ebay, etc.).

I've changed grips myself twice. The second time was much quicker and easier than the first because I had been through it before. You'll want to push back the rubber covers on the 2 throttle cables and loosen the tension before you do anything else on the throttle side. Then take the screws out of the switch housing and pull it apart enough to access the cables. Each cable has a round end on it that slides into a brass ferrule which slides into the grooves on the throttle grip. Be careful as these little brass buggers can get away from you easily. Carefully remove the cables from the grooves in the grip and the grip slides right off. Install the grip in the reverse order. For a stock type glued on left grip, the easiest thing to do is take a blade to it and cut it off and then use something to get rid of the glue residue on the bars before installing the new one. Some aftermarket grips glue on and some install with set screws. I've had both kinds. For the glue on kind, you'll need a tube of "grip glue" and apply per instructions on the tube. If you are dead set on removing and reinstalling the stock grips, as I said, good luck to you. Not worth it in my opinion.

Welcome to the forum from the Netherlands, Jason.

Here are a few links on the same subject; I'm shure you'll find the info you're looking for over here:

how do i change grips on my wide glide?

Replacing stock grips

There are some links in these threads to Instruction sheets explaining how to replace grips.

To get off the grip at the left hand side you could try to pry in a spray can tube and shoot in some WD40 and let it sit for a while and let it work on the glue.

I used brake cleaner and let it soak while I worked on the throttle side. Snapped free with little or no effort. No matter what you use, wrap the whole thing in a towel and cover the rest of the bike before you push the nozzle. And wear eye protection...it can spray everywhere.

Hang a small bucket under the throttle side controls to catch those little brass ferules WHEN they fall out...trust me, they will.
