I have been trying to figure out how to remove the tail light bracket off my 05 wide glide and cannot figure it out. I do not feel any screws or bolts under the fender holding it in.
The service and parts manual both have been unhelpful.
Could the method for remval be different because of the signal relocation kit that was installed?
thanks
thought I had replied to this response but it did not show up for whatever reason.
anyway, I do understand about the up/down side pins; that I can see but, the last hole in the side bracket on both sides has a wire running the hole and does not seem to be anchored like the manual says with screws so I don't understand how it's holding.
I keep positing it because I'm desperate for a fix.
thanks for helping out.
when I was working with my 98 wide it had pressed in nuts or bungs anserted in the plastic bracket, THESE had lost there grip and where spinning as I tried to loosen or tighten. I was able to put enough pressure on (nut) to get one side loose, the other side i had to hack the head off(with out scratching)and pry it out of the strut hole.I knocked the pressed in nuts out of bracket and replaced with actual nuts and new bolts. no more annoying rattle.....atleast not from that part anyway.
keep in mind it is a 1998 wide so could be different set up.hope that helps anyway.
RE: "pressed in nuts or bungs anserted in the plastic bracket"
Might be something to that or similar..not sure. I cannot see exactly what it is under the fender but when I stick my hand up there, I feel something round and thin covering the perimeter of the wire hole; like a plastic washer; nothing that I can actually put a wrench around or screwdriver into. It does feel like maybe it is either pressed in or maybe threaded in someway although I don't see how it could be tightened or as I want to do, loosen and remove it.
Only about 1/2 inch beyond this wiring hole I can feel what appears to be the outer edge of the plastic bracket. Beyond that is fender (metal).
Since I can't see under it, I shoved a camera under there. Let's see if I can get a pic out of it and I will post it up.
Do you have a pic of your current setup? If it has a relo kit the turn signal should be mounted in the last hole in the strut on a single bolt.
Ok, here are a couple of pics. The wires coming out of the left and right side shows them from the sides of the plastic bracket. As you can see around the opening, it is smooth and round so it's not a nut.
On my 03, in order to completely remove the taillight bracket, you have to remove the turn signals because the wires for the turn signals ran through the holes in the bracket I believe. Now I could basically disconnect the bracket from the bike and it would hang down between the fender and tire which allowed me to reach up under the fender when switching out seats from solo to 2up.
