Here is a thread explaining pretty much everything. You can use the 06 Forwards with the longer shift rod or use the 05 kit. I used the 06 kit and wedged the old shift lever behind an existing bolt. Didn't even need a cover for the old shift shaft.

I don't really see a point in using the 2006 kit and then installing it like the older kit.
Why pay the extra money for the 2006 kit?
I got the older kit for $249 plus shipping from M&M Cycles off Ebay...no wedging required because the bracket you need is there. It also comes with the chrome cover that bolts onto the shift shaft.
I wouldn't think the 2006 kit has the shift shaft cover since you are supposed to remove it to use the kit.

The reason I went with the 06 Kit is because, in the event my primary needs to come off, I will have everything I need to make it perfect AND the 05 shifter linkage is a bit shorter than the 06. Planning ahead, I guess.
I got the 06 Kit for the same price you got the 05.

I wonder why the shifter rods would be different.
My kit works perfectly and the shifter can pretty much be positioned anywhere on the shaft that you need it to be.
Is the brake rod different too?

I measured the shift rods:
05 is 13"
06 is 14 1/2"
looks like the 05 rod will deff work on the 06/07, i may buy a fancy shift rod anyway at some point
