I was checking my primary chain the other day and noticed something hanging down from one of the "towers" that the long bolts go through. I touched it and it stuck to my finger. It was a broken "O" ring. I got it out and looked at the other tower. It had a loose broken "O" ring hanging from it also. I got both of them out but really couldn't find out where they came from. They were about 1/2" in diameter. There's no leaking problem and it appeared they were both just hanging there waiting for someone to find them. I bought the bike used and the previous owner put chrome inner and outer covers on and installed after-market forward controls. I don't know if the covers are HD or after-market. The bike is a 2003 FXD and I've put about 20k miles on it since I bought it. Is this something I should worry about? I'm going to Sturgis and have replaced tires, battery, cables, spark plugs and wires so I really don't want to break down for something so stupid.
Which long bolts are you talking about? Do you have the small oval removable inspection plate?
Yes, I have the oval inspection plate. There are 4 bolts holding it on. Two of them are short bolts and bolt directly to the outer cover and two of them are long. The long bolts are the top and the rear facing bolts. The long bolts go through a tower on the outer cover and thread into a tower on the inner cover. I believe these "O" rings come from between where the two towers meet although now that the "O" rings are laying on my bench there doesn't seem to be any gap where they might have been. I'm guessing they are there to keep the primary oil from leaking past the long bolts.
I think "Cowpokey" has correctly identified the part, tower gasket, that I'm looking for. Oh well, time for a trip to the Stealer.
How many miles have you put on this bike yourself? Have you noticed any oil leaks? I know you said there wasn't but, I would look again. It there any sign of oil leaking past the bolts that you are looking at? I am guessing that the old "O" rings have come from someplace else during a maint. procedure and you have just found them. Not exactly sure what you mean by "towers". Do you have the capacity to post some pictures to better explain what exactly you are looking at?
Those o-rings go between the outer and inner primary on the long inspection plate bolts, not sure how they would fall out unless you removed the outer primary cover. Just unbolting the inspection plate will not dislodge them, at least not in my experience.
Only way to put them back in is remove the outer primary, since I doubt you could squeeze them in between the two..
