I have to get mine inspected soon. I have the VH standard baffled now, but did have the quiet baffles originally, and honestly they were just too quiet. Is the baffles thing that's new? I have always had to get my bike inspected here, but they changed it this year so the inspection is now due at the same time your tag expires. Then next year they go to where you pay your taxes on when you renew your tag also.

Having to have you bike or vehicle inspected at least 90 days before you get your tag was started 01 Jan 09.The reason I know this I have a buddy who inspects my truck and I last got it inspected in February 09 and he told me that I would not have to get it inspected again until December of 2010. this was because they were not going to make you get you vehicle inspected twice in the same year.

Get to know a local indy and you will be good. I just roll into my local guy and he just scans my registration and away I go.

Vehicle safety inspections go back to 1926 - way before any emissions concerns. Emissions inspections (totally different and usually separate from safety inspections) in most areas were instituted in response to EPA mandates and could be local. When I first moved to Florida we had them here in Jax, but not statewide and no safety inspection. I moved down from Ga and had neither type. Got to Ga by way of NC and before that Mass and NY. Freaked me out that there were no safety inspections - some of those privately owned, one man show logging trucks in Ga are downright scary! Doors missing, fenders flapping in the breeze, busted windows - gives me lots of confidence that, oh I don't know, the brakes are gonna stop him and his load before rear ending me!

Sounds to me like the NC inspection is safety focused - baffles and mirrors don't do anything for emissions.

I really hope our Governor gets voted out of office next election..... I was real suprised she had won.... I really dont think you will have any issues with anyone in NC if you take your baffles out after inspection (unless you go around revving your bike to redline, haha). I would get a cheap set that would fit, take them out after inspection.... or... when you get your bike inspected, put your stock pipes on for the day.. A friend of mine had a set of slip on Vance and Hines pipes with baffles. He went to Myrtle Beach and failed the muffler test and he got a ticket.. His bike almost is as quiet as a stock one too... CRAZY!!

Default I am all about safety

I am not sayin anything bad about inspections from a safety standpoint. I fully agree that some vehicles need to be pulled off the road and sent to the scrap pile. I have a problem with someone forcing me to modify my bike to fit what they think is acceptable. Not having baffles makes my bike more safe for me. I do not rev my bike and disrespect people in any way by being loud on purpose or haulin boogie in town. But it sure is nice when that teenie girl that has that oh so important text message that just has to be sent while driving in rush hour traffic can hear those pipes when tached up ro the rev limiter and they scare her stupid **** back into her own lane. Which by the way is ILLEGAL in NC and has not been being enforced. Any NC police officers on here?? Enforce this law and save lives! We need help here. I will buy baffles and leave them in, I have found a set that I like.

good to hear - 20 years ago I remember finding a huge pile of beer cans and other garbage in Pennekamp under a reef.... i'm relieved its all been cleaned up . Glad the hillbillies have stopped sinking their garbage rather than just taking it back to the dock.

just 'cause you don't see it, doesn't mean it ain't there.

Most of my friends in law enforcment has the Loudest Bikes...And virtually all of them do not worry about the loud pipes unless you are on an annoying crotch rocket and flying around town ...

Where do you draw the line? Is requiring mirrors or turn signals forcing you to modify your bike? Is requiring operable brakes on a logging truck beyond the limit, since they think it is acceptable but apparently the trucker doesn't agree?

Living in a society brings many benefits but also responsibilities. You can choose to fulfill yours, work to change the laws, or move to a state that doesn't have the same requirements. I personally don't have a problem with baffles or mirrors - heck, the exhaust on my Electra Glide is bone stock and I wouldn't have a serious issue if I were forced to put the stock pipes back on the Dyna. But I also respect and support your right to modify your bike as you see fit, provided it complies with the laws or you are willing to pay the consequences.

Before going through all the trouble of buying baffles and installing them just to pass the inspection try a different shop. Really.

I had to jump through this hoop last month running V&H Straighshots with no baffles and I passed mine at the local Harley shop no questions asked. First time I've had it inspected since it was new in '05 lol.

This is the worst state I have ever lived in as far as it's auto policies are concerned. I guess a silver lining is that you can remove the sticker for good.
