Well I removed my stock taillight today in hopes of installing a custom unit. Then unit is smaller than OE.
found the paint underneath (2007 SB Black Cherry)both scratched and the clearcoat rubbed off around the edges. I tried wax and compound. Cleaned it up a little but still very visible at even a glance
Thought about cutting the fender in a bobber style, thought about removing and painting all the tins and thought about just leaving it alone. However I just about puke when looking at the stock light.
Anyone have any ideas how to make it look acceptable with the new light??
Only idea I'm coming up with would be an accent paint job around the light in a contrasting color. I you clear over it you'll need to blend the clear to the OEM which could be a PITA. Post a pic or two and maybe it will spark a better idea.
Ended up with a duplicate of yours. Best design I have seen. Paid $70 and picked up at a local shop.
Not sure what I am going to do. I have an airbrush guy local and will stop by his place tomorrow to see what he can do for me. don't really want any weekend down time right now so this may well wait until the winter.
Why blend the clear when you could scuff it up with a high grit sandpaper and reclear the whole fender? If the scratches are still white adn not through to the color you could use 600 grit or higher and reclear the whole fender. If you repaint the fender youd reclear it anyways so either way youd fix the problem.
One pic of the paint around my stock taillight. There are no dents or dings which appear to be there in the pic. Just disappointed in the rub out of the clear coating.
Not sure what way to go.
Looking at sanding and re clearing, or
replacing with a newer bobber style. However used runs approx 100-125 plus 1 quart Harley black cherry paint $120 plus clear coat and then the prep and paint time
Just taking a dremmel tool to the fender cutting above the hole and retrofitting the taillight then install a side mount plate.
