My average since I purchased my 2010 WG new at the end of April, taken from 20 samples is 221 degrees. However it has slowly creeped up to the latest sample of 247 degrees. I don't know why but I have 2500 miles, changed to SE synthetic at 1000 mile change, installed Samson shorties, SE ac and had the HD dealer do a modified map download. Bike runs strong and smooth but temp has creeped up over time. Now looking into oil cooler to see if that helps.

Steady state on mine yester day at 95-100 degrees outside and 70-75 miles an hour was 245-250 degrees.

Running a 103", 10.5 compression, Wood 408-6 cams, ported heads and a Harley oil cooler.

Ride your bike 30 or 40 times and take the temp yourself when your done. Then average it out.Pretty much a No-brainer.

are you acting smart or just didn't understand his question?

when he asked "whats the average oil temp ? "
he wasn't asking what his average temp. was but what our avg. temp. is.

My bike runs about 220-240,depending on traffic patterns, when the temp outside is 90+,but I'm running 11+ comp with 212CCP!!! That's without the Lenale fan on!!!

I'd be curious to know what temp would be considered "max safe operating temp"?

That depends on what kind of oil you're running. A conventional dino oil will break down at or beyond 250*. The VI (viscosity improvers) are pretty much done once they hit that temperature and the oil will no longer do the job it was intended to do.

A 'good' synthetic will hold up past 300* without breaking down. Syn3 is a good oil but it's a Group III oil made from hydrocracked petroleum base. Amsoil is a Group IV oil made from PAOs (polyalphaolefin) and Mobil ain't sayin' but I'd bet a case of beer that their Mobil 1 V-Twin is a Group IV as well. I'm 99.99% certain of that.

I would say -- Anybody that is consistently running oil temps above 220* should give serious thought to an oil cooler. Even if you're in an area where you'll be riding in temperatures below 40-50* sometimes, the HD cooler has a thermostat on it, so shouldn't be a problem.

They say our engines aren't air-cooled, they're "prayer-cooled." And while you can get away without an oil cooler for a long time, just think of the effects over heated oil can have on the guts of your valuable and powerful engine through the long haul. A lot.

Just my

I run redline 20w50 in mine. I know it gets to 240-250F. But the syn oil is fine to keep it protected. The TC EFI engines should have an oil cooler standard.
