I just got a new HD street bob 2010. Black ice denim. Put forward controls and screaming eagle exhausts as the first mods.
The only bike in my town and amongst the first in India
I was wondering if I need to take any special care while using the motorcycle early on while the engine is still new.
It depends on which school of thought you follow. Some (official HD propaganda) suggest taking it easy for the first 500 miles (below 50 mph only, no passenger, no long trips), then not quite so easy (below 70, no long trips) for another 1000 miles. Others (various testing facilities) say that you should run easy for 25 miles, then ride it like you stole it. You pays your money and you takes your choice...

My first harley so any help would be great
thanks
Treat it with respect. It's new and break-in is a gut-wrenching, metal twisting process for any engine.
Listen to your dealer and Service Rep but use your head, too.
Warranties voided if Harley Air not used in tires.
Mandatory air checks are now required during routine service at all authorized Harley-Davidson dealers. Those found to have unauthorized air in their tires will have their warranties voided. A company service bulletin states however there will be a 30 day grace period for offenders to get their air exchanged. Industry analysts think Harley is determined to run aftermarket tire filling shops out of business. Lobbyists are rumored to have ear marked legislation making oem air mandatory in all vehicles.
Dealer should have told you to keep it under 50mph for the first 500 miles. Check your owner's manual, it will tell you the same thing; along with shift points. I'm surprised at the mod you got on a brand new bike, HD specifically says not to change anything with the engine (exhaust included) before the break in period is over. I suppose it's an exception to the rule when you use HD branded parts. BTW, I cranked upto 70 the first day, at about mile 60 on the clock. I didn't do very well keeping under 50 for the first 500, but didn't romp on it getting upto speed. Mine hasn't used any oil that I wouldn't expect with normal mileage.
Black Ice Denim is the coolest color HD ever put on a bike.

My dealer/salesman told me to 'keep it under 70MPH' for the first 500 miles. I asked, 'In what gear?' He just shook his head and walked away.
I did treat it with respect for the first 500. I didn't baby it and I didn't dog it. Then, around 500 miles, I did jump on it a couple times and changed all the fluids a few days later.
Just my opinion, but I believe there's a lot of very small, tiny metal particles running around in your oil from the break in. As do a lot of other people. Why you'd want to leave that in your oiling system is a mystery to me. So I changed it to Mobil 1 V-Twin, 20W-50 in the crankcase and primary and the Mobil 1 75W-90 gear lube in the tranny.
That stuff about synthetic oil and the break in period is a lot of horse hockey. In any case, if ain't broke-in at 500 miles, it ain't gonna break in.
