Well I put a set of autolites in the LowRider to see if there was any better performance and the screw on cap on the one in the rear cylinder keeps vibrating loose and shorting out and throwing the "no combustion in rear cyl" diagnostic code. Those little threaded screw on caps are a breakdown waiting to happen.......back to the HD plugs tomorrow.....[:@]
You might want to try a small dab of blue loctite on the threads. Not much, but it may fix the problem if the plugs are good otherwise. Just a thought.
No lock tight needed. With a pair of vise grips, set it to lightly crush the aluminum screw on tip. Then check to see if it screws on with a little resistance. If not, give the vise grip adjustment screw a 1/4 turn and crimp it again. You only need to crimp top part of the aluminum tip so the last few threads grab.
FWIW, I only use autolite plugs in my shovel. I find they are the only ones that hold up.
I tried the vice grips and the damn thing still vibrated loose........I think the plug probably gets too hot for the blue loctite. I wonder if the red loctite hold it on there?
Ion sense is not new. It is also not specific to Harley Davidson's. Ion sense absolutely works with non HD plugs. If it is a direct cross, it will work with ion sensing.
Ion sensing occurs at the time of ignition. During the combustion process a voltage is applied across the plug. At the time of combustion, ions are created and current flows. The amount it flows can then be used to determine several things including knock and misfires. Knock produces a pulse wave in the cylinder and that wave can be detected in the ion current flow. Misfires have no combustion process and therefor produce no ions to sense, which in of itself is seen as a misfire.
Ion sensing works with standard spark plugs. Spark plug wires can effect the sensing. Keeping up on the plug wire condition is more important in an ion sensing system.
Some plugs can through erroneous codes, typically associated with resister plugs in place where resister plugs were not stock. Also platinum plugs can effect sensing but theoretically should not. Harley sells SE platinum and gold plugs as well as stock plugs that were not specially made for Ion sensing ignition.
IRun the Autolite fine wires, gapped at .40 and they work great. I trusted Autolite platinums since thats what i've been running in my Ford Ranger for 65,000 miles (on my second set) and they are great....
