Default Dyna Question

I've never paid too much attention to the Dyna models, but have recently started to look a little closer at them. I've never had a new bike, and keep my used beasties for 10 - 20 years, and usually over 200k miles. I don't care for the RK/EG series bikes as the frame sits the rider too high, doesn't lend itself to customizing/chopping, and is just plain oogly. So that leaves Sloptails and Dynas for future used bikes.

I'd really like to get a Dyna in the next couple years and set it up similar to my old FL Shovel; basically as a lowered Wide Glide with 16s front and rear, solo seat, rear fender mounted to swingarm & hugging the tire. With that in mind I dropped into the Hot Springs, AR dealer (really high prices!!) and crawled around looking at a Dyna. Pretty much liked what I saw, though I'm not sold on the blubber-mount (no misprint!) engine. Just something else that will eventually wear out and need attention, y'know?

The one thing that really caught my attention was the swingarm mounting. It appeared to be mounted directly to the tranny, instead of the frame. Couldn't get a sales-puke's attention to confirm what I think I saw, though. I figured if it was mounted to the tranny, it was so the engine/tranny/rear drive would all stay aligned as it all jangled on the rubber mounts.

Anyway, that makes me ask three questions:
1) Is the Dyna swingarm mounted to the tranny?
2) Has anybody here owned a high mileage (100k+ miles) Dyna?
3) If the swingarm is tranny-mounted, has anybody cracked the boss(es) on the tranny?

Thanks for the quick reply, Bob.

Looks like I might rethink the next project.

Skip, the rear fork swingin off the trans housing was one of the first things I noticed on the new machine.
It is clearly visible, and I doubt the sales personel cares where, or even if, the swingarm swings.

One theory I have on the reason for this is the belt drive tension
to remain constant throughout the arc.

Rubber mounting can be changed to rigid, easy enough.

Q1 - no doubt about it.

Q2 - myself no, the dynaglide line has been around a long time and
surely there are many with well over the 100K.
If you mean 06 with 100 plus, that is some hardcore ridin.

Q3 - Looks mighty strong to me.

Build the machine Skip. Would be a nice addition to your stable.

I'm considering going the other way, back to Evo or Shovel.
Too much wiring brains etc on the new stuff.
Really like my 06 88 SuperGlide though, gonna keep it for awhile.

Want another SportSter too.

I wonder if the new swingarm setup is to stop any flexing (rear wheel steer), this would be great as you would not have to buy a True Track stabilizer?????

Skip,

Check out the dynas that have been converted. 2000 FXDLWGC Heritage Dyna Classic and here FL Front end there is a guy Ken R who put a FL front end on his 2003 Wide Glide. I could not get the link to his website to work this time but I have seen it and it looks good. Almost like something from the factory.

Just some ideas for you to ponder.
