Are you going to tear down the fork tubes and re-paint them or just mask everything off? If you're going to tear them down, I'd probably send them to a pro and have them powder-coated. WTH? You've already done the most PITA part.

If you don't want the bike down while waiting for the forks to come back? Fine, I can understand that. Just wait until you don't mind waiting.

If you're just going to try to mask everything and paint over them? I got no help for you.

If you insist on doing it yourself, and dis-assembling everything, prepping it correctly and then re-painting it. See if you can get hold of some Spies Hecker. It's what they use (or used to??) on High end European cars like BMW and Mercedes. Failing that, see if you can get some chip resistant rocker panel type paint. Either are more resistant to the inevitable chips you're going to pick up from the road.

Me? I'd defer to a pro. He'll have the acid dip tank, the experience, know-how, equipment and tools to do the job properly.

If you like the 'Rat' look, just rattle can them. You'll get what you're looking for.

No chipping or fading with the appliance epoxy after about 1,500 miles highway, town and back roads.

That is the advice a I pretty much followed, except I pulled the fork tubes off the bike to paint. After a week of curing the finish did slightly dull and it saw no direct sunlight?
