I just don't like a hurricane hitting me in the chest every time I get above 60 mph. I bought one after having to pull off the road because I was to tired to hold on to grips any longer. I will never take it off.
On the highway, I rarely drop below 75. Most often it's more like 90, or even triple digits if the road is empty. No windshield. It did feel like it was beating me up when I first got the bike, but, I guess I got used to it. Now I can do it all day and night.
I go have the windshield/no windshield problem as well. I love the look of my bike without it, but can tolerate having it. I live in Mass, and try to ride as much of the year as I can. The problem is, I have a 50 minute commute, and have to be on the road at 0500. Once we get into mid October, that ride is much more enjoyable with the shield. I ended up getting the HD quick release. It takes 5 seconds to put on/take off, and there is no hardware left in the bike.
Did a short hop (400 mile r/t) this weekend down to Md. to see my mom and my sister. Took the long way home through York and Harrisburg. Having my Q/R shield on the bike sure helped as I saw a couple BIG bugs get pushed over the top. One was not so lucky though. The sucker hit just a little left of center, chest high. I have no idea WTF it was, but it was pretty damned big. He made such a loud smack when he hit, that it startled me. Main splat ring was probably 3" - 4" across. Wearing just a long sleeve T-shirt, I'm sure that sucker would have left a bruise if it hit me in the chest! This was the second decent highway run that I've done since I put it on and I'm pretty much sold.

I don't know about all day and night, but 80 just seems like the right speed to "cruise"; with times of kicking it up to triple digits for a bit.

I'm always going too fast. Don't know why, its just how I drive. But 80mph seems to be the magic number here in VA. Pass that speed, they take your bike, license, throw you in jail....oh, you may get the bike back, but it will cost you.
I took this off the VA DMV Website. Its the first two of 15 reckless driving laws on their books.
Reckless driving - speeding in excess of 80 mph
Reckless driving - speeding 20 mph or more above the posted speed limit
