Seek Advice - Going to paint silver engine into black
I have a 2009 FXDC Super Glide Custom. I love everything about the bike, but the silver engine. I waited a year to see if I could live with the silver, but it hasn't happened. I am thinking about painting it black. I wanted to seek advice from anyone who has done it themselves. My plan was fully cleaning with a degreaser, lightly sand, and not remove the engine or tranny. I will mask off all the chrome and surrounding areas with blue tape and paper. After that, I am thinking of using the Harley High Temp Black Paint. My concern being the reliability of paint and not flaking off. Has anyone done it with success or failures before I possibly screw up by ride??
I have not tried this so I have no advice but if you could please post pics of your progress when you finish, I have thought of doing this also, I love the way the blacked out 883 engines look. sorry my post was not helpful.
I read Naz Mans thread on painting his engine. I sent him a PM to see how it has held up over the year. I plan to do the same and take lots of pictures.
i have painted a ton of motors, it is all in the prep bud, that sucker has to be clean!!!! here are some shots denatured alchole and lots of non clorine brake cleaner will really clean it up well. i always use a light coat of primer, then after all is said and done get that motor up to operation temp for at least a 30 min cycle wiht full cool down 3 times before i trust it to last. works!
i am a big fan of the VTH high heat paint works great, just do not go too high of a heat rating or it iwll not cure
Went to local dealer to get paint before I got JRK's recommendation. The salesman who sold me the bike asked what I was doing. Told him about painting engine. He said it would voids my standard and extended warranty. Stated painting holds in heat and leads to engine damage. Guess I will have to live with silver until warranty is done.

Not real smart guy if you ask me cause its painted to begin with how does he think they got it silver.....lol
What a crock ... don't pay any attention to him ....
If, as and when you have a warranty claim (and here's hoping you won't) ... if the tech can objectively prove that the incremental heat from the black paint caused the damage, they could exclude that particular damage proven to be caused by it ... but to make a blanket statement like that is just ignorant ....
Think about the two or three guys who've posted (or linked) ... don't you suppose they would be warning you not to do it if it could cause potential damage ...?
If you want to paint your motor, go right ahead ... it's not going to damage it ....

Don't listen it him....he only wants you to use their service department to do it. They always scare you with, "if you do this or that OR do it yourself, it'll void the warranty. And by the way, we charge $X in the service department to do the same thing...and it won't void the warranty."
