Help starter problem
Ensure your battery is charged.
Ensure battery does not need to be replaced.
Check all battery and starter connections.
Check solenoid.
I just wound up changing my starter in my '97 and these were the steps I took first. Could not get it too crank over.

First pull the wire off the solenoid the small on that triggers the starter, it the starter stops engaging it will be the starter relay or the start switch on the bars, the relay is cheap and easy to test, this happened to mine a couple weeks ago and it was the start switch that was sticking replaced switches and problem was gone.
