Default fixed or detachable sissy bar?

tossing up on which to get for my 2000 fxdwg, sometimes I need one so I can take the kids for a ride, but most of the time I'm on my own. are the detachable ones a problem or has anyone got pics of their wg with one fitted?

The quick detach is the way to go. You will not have any problems out of it, or at least I have not had any out of mine.

Quick detach here also. Although it stays on pretty much all the time...I have to be able to carry the safety gear that's required to get back on base, that I take off as soon as I pull off the installation.

I'm just wondering if the passenger is comfortable with the detachable plates. Looks to me as though they would poke the passenger right in the butt.

A sissy bar is a great idea for riders, especially kids! Getting poked does look possible if the rear seat happens to be too thin. Send "dope_man_21" a pm if he doesn't post back up. I personally like the medium low sissy bars.

I think these are the correct part numbers (and there are a few) for the set-up that I have.
52866-06 Detachable Sideplates - Chrome
53961-06 Detachable Docking Hardware Kit
52735-85 Low Sissy Bar Upright Medallion Style - Chrome
52626-04 Medium Low Backrest Pads

BUT, it would probably be easier (and cheaper to find something in the classifieds here or on Ebay)

Based on what you're looking to do, detachable is the way to go. In addition to the sissy bar and padded back rest, you might also want to get the luggage rack so you can strap a bag on.

My wife will only get on the bike behind me if the sissy-bar/ backrest is in place. She rides on the stock seat and has no complaints about the sided plates hitting her anywhere. Nice to be able to take them off when I like, or use them for traveling.
