Stainless Brake Lines
Thinking of buying stainless brake lines & clutch cable, is this something I can fit myself or is it better done at a dealer ? I can buy the cables at about a 1/3 of the dealer price. Any info would be greatly appreciated.
Paul,
What you can do is take a piece of plastic coated metal wire (as used in the garden to bind plants and flowers)

and run it along your stock lines and cables and write down the measurements.
Pay special attention to the different parts and seizes of the clutch cable.
Here's a link to a pdf; check pdf page 93 and further for more info on stock cable lengths: http://www.harley-davidson.com/en_US...8_MultiFit.pdf
Another option is shown in this video (from an old post of mine):

Here's a link to an instruction video on how to determine correct cable lenght after having changed bars/risers; it starts at 3:17

Magnum has a good site that will tell you the length of stock cables, if you are not sure they are stock then FXD has a good method. You did not mention changing out anything. I changed bars out, ordered bars first, held them up to my existing bars and measured how much longer they need to be than stock. Then I ordered the cables, a little slower but dead nuts on the money that way. Easy job to do yuorself, buy from the internet and install or get an indy to do it for you.
Good luck
Good luck
As long as you are ok with bleeding the brakes its all straight forward. When you change the clutch cable there is a heavy duty retaining ring / circlip inside the cover that is quite tight, but with decent tools its all do-able. The workshop manual can be very useful or at least it was for me. Best wishes.
Sorry to hijack the thread but how did you get the black ice pearl color on an 09 FXDC. My wife has that color on hers but it's a 2010 FXDC.
Although I bought the bike in 2009 as far as I am concerned it is a 2009 model, but I think Harley list it as a 2010 model. Just like last month when they launched there 2011 bikes in 2010. Hope this answers your question.
