Do you think getting the air out away from the motor helps with power?

I think getting the air intake out into the cooler 'clean' air stream and allowing the forward movement of the bike to enhance the air flow... in the same direction... is a good thing.... you wind up with a very small ram air effect, and with my tad bit longer intake tube... a small tunnel ram effect as well.

I have not had my bike on a dyno as yet, however... after mounting this intake up and retuning with my TTS... I can run under 65 easy in 6th gear... I've cruised along at 60 up and down hills, with no problems. It "seems" to have increased my low end torque by a small amount. Won't really know for sure, until I put her on a dyno... but I'm not all anxious about it either... I'll probably wait till after I do a set of cams next year before I drop coin for a full on dyno run.

Default More air!

Will need to do a little research on the air cleaner, currently stashed in a parts box.
The motor is a HYPERFORMANCE MOTORS prepared 2004 Twin cam, 124", R&R Cycle stage 5 heads, CP Pistons (8.1 comp.) special build for a thicker dome to handle the boost, 62mm H P I throttle body, Pure Flow Oil Filter, Daytona Twin Tech closed loop computer, Aerocharger (Turbo Doc, Salt Lake City) Series 66 Variable Vane Turbo, RBRacing 2 into 1 exhaust (modified by Puccio Welding), Bell Intercooler (Puccio adapted), Puccio designed and fabricated Air Plenum, H-D 5 speed, Rivera Pro Clutch, E-Z Pull assist, H-D chain primary w/ teflon shoe, Storz 55mm Inverted Front Forks, Race Tech Shocks, Ducati Carbon Fiber fender, 883 Flat Tracker bars for street , Clip Ons for Bonneville, Brembo 6 piston Brake Calipers, W8Less Forged Composite Rotors (front), cast W8Less on rear), H-D polished mag wheel, Avon W-Rated Tyres, Storz Steering Damper, Sputhe Motor & Transmission Isolators, 17" Duece rear mag w/Avon W-Rated rear tyre, Auto Meter Tach, Boost gage, H-D 1/4 Fairing and Chin Fairing.....AMSOIL FLUIDS. 92 Octane Chevron fuel.
The motor is maintained by HARDTAILZ, Ron, Jeff, Kevin & Mike, in San Jose, Ca.
2009 Bonneville 6 PASSES 2 RECORDS 3000 M AF 145.018, 3000 MPS AF 148.426, TOP SPEED 149.811.
2010 CHEATED DEATH 2 TIMES! B U B SPEED TRIALS!
In 2010 after adding the Turbo in August at Bonneville made 2 Passes and aborted both runs at 150 to 170 mph (while entering the timed mile) after severe tank slappers, torque and horsepower were ripping the spokes out of the rear wheel rim.
As of today we do not have dyno sheets, although at 48 to 5,000 rpm (50-60% throttle) ( 8# boost spring) we were making over 180 hp, running about 190 mph during a brief dyno session. Seems we needed to tie the bike down a little better, the slightest amount of throttle and we were jumping off the dyno drum and flexing the front forks against the wheel stop.
After Bonneville changed the bars out and ride it as usual. Will roll to Monterey on Sat. and Ventura on Sun. this week end.
The 124" motor has rolled coast to coast with over 70,000 trouble free miles on the freeway, drag strip and the Salt Flats. The chassis has over 150,000 documented miles.
See it run on you tube 2 wheeler racing turbo harley.

Hey, you guys with those round air cleaners, can you tell me what effect they have on your knee and foot position on forward pegs. I have the stock football air cleaner on my 2001 Wide Glide and it really interferes with my knee and forces my foot further out on the forward peg. It is not as comfortable as my left side that has no interference and would like to have that same luxury on the right side. I would prefer to stay away from the intakes that that put the filter out front, though.
Thanks,
Don

Once an air cleaner can flow as much as the engine can draw it makes zero difference on the dyno. Only for engines with a big flow (stage-3, big CC kit, etc) will you see any advantage of an A/C with a bigger surface area than the majority of good aftermarket stage-1 ones.

The only other exception I can think of is if you have a reversion pulse from a poorly tuned exhaust causing a big stand-off of fuel/air at the carb/throttle-body mouth. Then a long intake is important.
Your standoff wave (or reversion wave) does not come from a poorly tuned exhaust. It comes from two sources: the column of intake air hitting the back of the intake valve, and 2: As the piston is on the compression stroke the intake valve is not closed all the way, and pushes some of the charge back out.

Do a little more reading.. off forum..

I got roasted last time for my 'opinion' on intakes... so this will be all I say on the subject.... your welcome.

I specifically mentioned "Only for engines with a big flow (stage-3, big CC kit, etc)..." and that's exactly what that article is talking about, a 103ci engine with modded heads and throttle body etc.

You rarely see a stand-off effect on lightly tuned stock bikes and you only get it on stage-1 bikes with crap exhausts. The symptoms are a fuel-soaked A/C filter element. If you take the A/C off you can sometimes actually see the column of air-fuel flying out the intake. You can fix it two ways: put a foot length of pipe on the intake (as they did in the article - hardly practical) or fix the exhaust.
