Default 06 DWG Bar Swap Completed

It took 8 hrs and ZERO beers (until I was done) to complete the bar swap with new cables, brake line and wiring of the mini-tach.

I was methodical about it and testing component function as I reassembled everything. Sorry I don't have any outside pics, crappy weather yesterday here in Michigan.

One HUGE issue when I was done though. I went to the HD dealer for a few items and BRAKE FLUID before I started. I trusted the parts guy to give me the proper fluid when I asked for it, as it was behind the counter. He asked which bike, and I told him. he turned around, grabbed a bottle and handed it to me. I asked "That bike takes Silicone Fluid". He said, "Yup".

Shame on me for not going over and looking at a floor model. Had the fluid been out on a shelf, I would have probably looked at a floor model myself and then grabbed the fluid.

So it's about 1am Saturday night and I am ready to bleed the brakes. I take the M/C cover off and add fluid, then bleed the brakes with my Mighty Vac. 5 minutes and I have a sweet firm lever. Then I proceed to put the cover back on and read it as I do.

USE ONLY DOT 4 FLUID!!! [:@] Mr. Part guys sold me Dot 5 and being the dumba$$ I have become after being out of the car dealers for 10 years, I didn't verify my fluid type BEFORE HAND! I know better, maybe it was late, or maybe I have become trusting and complacent. Anyhow, I drained all the fluid back out, pushed the caliper pistons back in to push out anything that got in there.

Tomorrow I will get the PROPER fluid and run a bunch through it. No damage should have been done in that short amount of time. Especially since when I pushed the pistons back in, DOT 4 fluid came out AFTER the purple DOT5, meaning it was still in contact with the rubber parts. It's just frustrating and $10 shot in the behind.

Now the bar pics...

Very different. I haven't seen those bars on a Wide Glide. I'm partial to apes, but it looks good.

Mine calls for dot 5. It's an 01 WdGld. Do the newer bikes ask for dot 4?

Thanks guys, it was an adventure changing the bars on a bike I owned for less than 24 hrs.

There is no pattern I can find to HD's reason for which bikes got DOT 4 and which DOT 5. Sort of frustrating. I looked at work today. My buddy's 02 dresser has DOT 5, so does another guy's 100th 883. Mine is an 06 with DOT 4?

It's all good now, just came in from the fluid flush. 1 qt of DOT 4 through it and a good firm pull. After my daughter's karate class, I'm going for a burn through the 'hood.
