Since day 1, I couldn't stand the fuel tank badge on my 2010 FXDC (Vivid Black drippin with chrome). Not so much the shape, but it was angled up and just didn't look good. So, out came the dental floss, WD40, and a pair of gloves. Took about an hour. What a difference. I've looked a J&P, Adventure Harley, and Miller for decal options and was wondering if you folks knew of any other sources. For any of you that are considering removing yours, there is no need for a hair dryer to heat up the badges if you can take a ride to heat up your bike. Once mine was parked in the garage, the heat radiating from the motor heated up the tank and badges.
Hey Dad, did yours have a plastic or metal logo, or was it just a decal? I have a 2011 FXDC and was considering removing mine but man, if you bobble this it ain't exactly like you scratched a fork tube a little removing the reflectors...
Mine were metal. I would definitely use dental floss instead of fishing line. I started out using fishing line and noticed it was indeed scratching the clear coat. Just heat up the badges however you want and then dribble some WD40 along the top of the badge and let it soak into the adhesive abit. Keeping the floss running along the contour of the tank will leave you less residue to deal with. After it's off, then dab the adhesive with a Q Tip soaked with WD40 to soften it up. I scraped with a plastic putty knife making sure I wasn't bearing down too hard. The rest you can remove with a cotton rag damp with WD40 to clean up the remnants. I wiped the area with a wet cotton towel with water on it, dryed it, and then polished it with Black Magic. Can't even tell they were ever there. Just finished removing those butt ugly reflectors from the forks.
11Bravo, not sure if this will help, but I have an 09 SB and I am looking to put retro tank badging on it. After a lot of hunting, I found Jetglow's website. If you google them you should be able to find tank decals from '48 on up. I am looking at the '59-60 badges. I think they will set my bike off nicely. Happy hunting, the Masshole.
