Ok guys... Im looking to powder coat the rear stock shocks of my 07 SB... how easily do the shocks come apart? I would like to coat the spring itself, the"cap" that goes over the top bolt and probably the top and bottom "caps" of the shock itself... has anyone taken apart the stock shock? Is it even recommended? Im ASSUMING that a good powder coating job on the spring will survive and compression\unloading that will happen with day to day riding???
It will survive but good luck finding a small enough spring compressor (at a good price) to break em down. I tried but it ended up being cheaper to get a set of burelys off eBay.
Talk to Joe (site sponsor). He quoted me a very reasonable price for powdercoating mine to black this past weekend. He even said there was a small fee for breaking them down too. I won't quote the prices in case I heard them wrong. Hit him up with a PM.
I stole one of my daughter's art brushes, and hand-painted mine without even taking them off the bike. I used oil-based Rustoleum.
It's been over three years, and the finish still looks great. No flaking or peeling. Of course, if you want to do the caps, that's a whole different animal.
About painting your spring with a brush, I did the same with the spokes of my OEM wheels with a brush (yes all 80 of them !) still looks great, got some paint chips here and there, but it's really minor, and spokes are way more exposed to damage then shoks !
about taking the OEm shocks apart, that's a no go.
