Duz anybody know?
I'm modifying my engine guard to attach to the frame where the forward controls mount. I'll have to cut the 1 1/4 bar and weld to the new bracket I'm fabricating. Question is: Can you re-chrome a part that's already been chromed? Figured I'd send the whole thing to the chromer to be chromed. The parts I fabricate would be virgin steel welded to the chrome tube. Obviously, the existing chrome on the tube would be damaged. Would the whole guard have to be de-chromed and then re-chromed?

My understanding is yes! When setting out to chrome plate an item it is first polished, then nickel plated, before being chrome plated. Chrome won't plate direct onto steel without a bit of help from the nickel! It's not like paint, where we can blend new paint into old.
'Triple plated' chrome uses copper under the nickel, hence three layers of plated metals.
