I have a 2005 Dyna super glide, the battery is located under the seat (which I can get to), but I have attempted to access the pos and neg posts to no avail.... I feel like a fool, I have called the HD dealership - no help, I have looked online - no help... .I am trying you wonderful people... please help me - step by step get to my battery so I can charge it!!! I hae a 2005 Dyna Super Glide.... thanks much!!!
The 2 bolts circled in the pic retain the battery box.Start with loosening them and removing the top of the battery box. (with seat removed) this should give you easy access to the terminals.
If that doesn't give you enough access you can remove those bolts and the battery box. What I did was make a wiring harness and mounted an outlet in the hole above the top circled bolt. Use a 10 AWG wire for this connection just to be safe. This allows me to plug anything in and run on battery power, including a battery tender. If your Ignition switch is not in that hole, it will be covered by a metallic tape.
This connector usually comes with a battery maintainer when you purchase it. If you have a maintainer but not the connector, then you can order one on line or probably pick one up at your local dealer as most keep them in stock. Attach this to the terminals and then reinstall the battery and route the end of the connector to somewhere on the bike that you can easily access without removing the seat or anything else. Mine is attached to the frame tube in front of the right side cover using wire ties.
Another special tool is a 10mm combination wrench. Heat up the center of the wrench with a torch and put a bend in the wrench about 30-45 degrees. When the battery tray drops down, tilt the battery out and diconnect using your new special tool. Negative cable first then positive. When connecting, positive first then negative. While your in there clean all cables, terminals and install a smart tender pigtail. Then use it.
do what I did SELL IT and get a Harley with acessable battery I had a 09' nighster with the battery buried under a ton of wires under the seat after spending 6-500 dollars a pop for two years to H-D dealership to pick bike up and replace battery I sold took a loss and now am looking for a 2003 or older 1200cc sporty
