Default fwd controls yea or nay

I'm about 6'3" and ride an 05 Lowrider. I'm thinking about installing forward controls, and had a few questions for the experts on this forum.
- I never used fwd controls before--should I start now?
- What effects will they have on handling?
- Which brand should I go with?
- I'm moderately handy with a wrench, but no mechanic--can I do the install myself? I got all the manuals.

Thanks

If you get the kit from HD that fit the WideGlide you should have no problems. Also get the extensions for the longer reach. With your height your knees will be real high on the tank. The worst thing you can't do is stand on the pegs to ride over an obstacle. On a slow sharp turn,i.e. u-tutn you'll probably drag a heel. I have had the HD kits on both of my bikes for many years, no problems.

When I got my sporty I never thought about fwds. Bought my lowrider and put floorboards on it. Still rode the sporty, no big deal Bought the rkc and rode , and rode. Took the fx out and felt cramped, but I still had the Lindby bars and a place to stretch my legs. Took the sporty out and my thought was "I need fwds" Found a used set of oem and put them on. I am 5'5" and sometimes feel cramped still on the lowrider. They take getting used to, I have to remind myself that I am on the sporty and the controils are not below but you will get used to it. Perhaps find someone who has them and see if they will let you try them

I'm 6'0" and my Wide Glide came with forwards. I love them and don't think I'd be comfortable any other way.

I've had forwards on all my bikes and just bought an 09 Street Bob with mids controls. Forwards are the first thing I'm going to do to it.

6 feet here with long legs. I always liked the control I got with mids. When I bought my Street Bob the previous owner had already installed forwards. I was hesitant at first, but got over it within the the first few hundred miles. I still think I get slightly more control with mids, but not nearly enough to make a difference. At 6'3" I say go for it, you won't regret it.

Good question, but I'd submit that it really depends on your riding style and comfort level. I'd say mid controls are nice for zipping through the twisty backroads and mountains, but I have forward controls on my '10 Fat Bob and only scrape now and again.

Based on your height (about an inch taller than me), I'd say go for the forward controls. You'll sit in the saddle so much more comfortably. It won't have any affect on handling, unless you lean that bike over a lot on the road.

As SeniorSuperGlideE8 stated, those extensions from the MoCo will be a snap to put on, especially if you read and follow the directions, and have your manual for reference. Good luck on your choice, and post some pics of your install process.

I think to each his own. I'm only 5'9" but if I couldn't put forwards on my Bob, I wouldn't have one. The first thing I did when I bought the bike was get HD forwards.

So HD is the way to go, not Kurakyn or something? Oh, and thanks for all the replies--good advice all.
