Exclamation Passenger peg mount Torx bolts - Arrrrgh!

I'm having a hard time loosening/removing the passenger footpeg mount Torx bolts. The Torx hole in the bolt is so dang shallow, and the room you have to work in there is so tight that it's almost impossible to even put the Torx bit to them. Belt, fender, frame - everything blocks decent access to the bolts. In addition, I swear you have to have a couple of hundred pounds of downward pressure on the Torx bit to even begin to apply the torque necessary to loosen these bolts. I don't want to tear the whole rear end apart just to remove the mounts.

Anyone here ever removed your mounts? How'd you do it?

I don't know whose bright idea it was at the MoCo to use these bolts. Standard Allen heads would have been much better.

yep, PITA, hardest is belt guard side. try putting a sodering iron tip on the bolt head, let it get hot , it will help release the lock tite. changed all mine to ss allen heads.

I had to remove the rear wheel and let the swingarm drop down to get mine off. Luckily, I am in the middle of swapping my wheels out so not a big deal.

I removed mine about 3 weeks ago..ive never had such a headache. but something that really helped me out was using a torch to heat up the bolt first once i heated it up i used some vise grips to break it free...the combination of little/no clearance, design of the bolt, and the loctite...makes it retarded challenging. I hope thats helped

When you say it's shallow, makes me think it's Torx Plus and not Torx. There are two kinds (yea I could not believe it when I found out either).

I know for a fact on my H.D. forward controls the front brake pedal clevis is Torx Plus but the frame mount bolts (on the brace arm) are standard Torx. Crazy mixing it up that way, but that is the way mine are.

But yes definitely try heating up the casing to expand it and break loose any loctite that may be in there. If it is in fact a Torx Plus you might better get one or it could strip the head.
