Question Where Is The Temperature Sensor On A Dyna?

While out riding today on my 07 FXD I was experimenting with my new Dakota digital gauge, one of the features is a temperature readout.I noticed while riding it would average about 250 degrees F. I let it idle for about five minutes and it climbed to 280 F,the ambient temperature was 70 F. This tells me that on a hot day I'm going to see 300 degree plus temps. My question is where is this reading originating from, the exhaust or engine?

+1 on the previous location, keep in mind these are head area temps so they will be higher than oil temps. That Dakota is nice, I'm gonna get one of those.

Right,I fully expect to see 350 F in stop and go traffic on a hot day, that is why I have always used synthetic oil.

I have a ThunderMax ECM installed and just rode for about 3 hours in 75 degrees...came back let it idle for another 10 minutes and plugged it into my computer and was running about 360...seems high to me...

Yes, that is high. Idling for 10 minutes can cause an air cooled engine to get hot.
