Hello All,
Is there supposed to be a "normal" operating temp for my 15 Dyna Low 103?
The reason I ask is because I recently changed over from HD SYN3 to Amsoil.
My engine temp is now reading over 200 -240 within a mile of driving using Amsoil. Is 240 too hot? What is too hot?
HD SYN3 very rarely saw 200. Ambient temps are between 80-85.
240 isn't too hot. That said, I'm surprised at your results. I'd have anticipated just the opposite.
Agreed; interesting. OP, how are you getting your engine temperature numbers? Are you using your tuning device and taking the reading from the sensor located on the front cylinder?
What other mods have you done to your bike? That 200° engine temperature number is actually quite good; I've done quite a few modifications to get my engine temperatures down in that range...

My ride never saw 200 + before my oil change to Amsoil. Not implying that Amsoil is culvert in anyway.
Originally oil temp with Amsoil was lower but after a couple of days it started reading 200 +.
To be on the safe side I'm have the bike trailed to where the oil was changed and they will check it out.

It has a FP3, the only mod it has, which I have setup to monitor as a choice the engine temp. Not sure if it monitors front or rear cylinder.

Someone more familiar with the characteristics of Amsoil may be of some help to you in understanding this. I do know some synthetics, notably RedLine, are a naturally aggressive detergent. This has been known to raise issues when switching from a dino to such a synthetic because all the internal lacquer and varnish, harmlessly built up prior to the switch, comes off in a one'r when you switch to the synthetic. A few years of crap hitting the gallery all at once raises issues as you may expect. If I were you, I'd try another oil change, "using Amsoil", to see what happens.
Yep, I know Syn-3 is a synthetic. It says so right on the can. I'd change engine oil, and make note of the condition of what comes out.

Many thanks for the food for thought suggestions.
It's going back to the shop that did the switch to Amsoil because it's got them wondering also.
Yep know what ya mean about what defines synthetics. All in how its interpreted.

It's monitoring the front cylinder; the only engine sensor HD saw fit to give us
To be seeing 200° engine temperatures, that's Holy Grail level for many HD owners; seeing them on a stock bike is quite interesting. I've done many mods to get my cooling to that level and I find it most odd your temperatures went up so I'm following this with great interest; please do let us know the outcome and what you discover

Indy Shop rode and tested bike to record the highest temps he could read using lazer temp gun. His readings were 248F while my FP3 Engine Temp app was recording as high as 310.
I sent Vance & Hines an email with all finding from Indy Shop along with their phone number.
Will call V&H Monday to hear what they think if this is a bug or what.
