I agree with above. 75-90 Mobil 1 Synthetic Gear Lube. Under $10 for the quart.

I also agree you should change all 3 at the same time anyway.

i just wanted to do the engine oil. It only had 100 miles on it, I don't follow the manufacturers break-in procedure, but ride it somewhat hard for the first 100 miles then change the oil.

You don't need to change them all at once. According to the 07 Dyna manual the engine oil should be changed every 5,000, primary every 10,000 and tranny every 20,000.

There's a reason Harley-Davidson prints a Service Manual. Personally, I wouldn't point out to the world that I failed to read and/or comprehend the user manual or service manual and check the picture twice before draining a critcal fluid. And no, all fluids do not have to be changed at the same time (as PigInABlanket points out above). If you use proper fluids, exceeding the change intervals is nothing more than a waste of money.

I think you mean changing the fluids out before the specified change intervals is a waste of money.

Damn, I been changing all of the fluids every 3k miles! This time I will change em all and start changing using these specs. I have a manual, but I never thought to check intervals.

Not trying to start an argument here but, using the mileage intervals you posted above, if a person only rides 5,000 miles a year, he would change out the primary fluid every 2 years and the tranny fluid every 4 years???

At the very least, change all the fluids at the start of every riding season. As hot as these pigs run, it's cheap insurance. And all the money we dump on these things and you guys are worried about some $10 fluid.

Hah hah...that happened to me..with my 2006. The manual is WRONG....the pictures are swapped, and I followed it. There is a thread somewhere around here about it. As I watched the volume come out I was scratching my head. As I refilled..imagine my further confusion.

Kinda made a lot of us feel stupid. "Follow the manual" is usually a good rule of thumb..."usually". Hard to judge when it's wrong though.

+1 on that... Just change them all at the same time, 20 bucks on a 15k machine is no big deal. I find it much easier to do them all every 4-5k miles, which usually means twice a year for me.

Just ride your bike more than 5,000 miles a year. Why would someone want to spend all that money on a bike and not want to ride it much?
