So, I finally bit the bullet and ordered a progressive drop in kit for the front of my wide glide. I don't want to run into any surprises on the install, so I have a few questions. I know the kit comes with a spacer and the more u cut off of it the more it lowers the front. I have read that some people have cut it and others have left it alone.
Should I get some fork oil to top-off the fluid before re installing the caps?
Last one, what size socket do I need to remove the fork caps?
Thanks very much for the help and info!
I googled and found out it is a 35mm socket for the caps. I also picked up a quart of fork oil just in case.
The only question I have now is how much to cut the spacer. I want a decent drop but do not want any bottoming out. Would like to hear your opinion/experience.
I think the max you can cut the spacer is 2 inches. I went for 1 1/2 inches and dropped it right where I wanted it. Remember, you can cut it shorter, but ya can't cut it longer, so you might want to do a trial cut. Look at the fork nut socket from Motionpro. It has an o-ring to protect the finish and well worth the $17.00 or so if you ever plan on changing the fork oil yourself. Definitely get a little fork oil to bring it back up to spec. I used a cheap plastic slide caliper from Harbor Freight, and just added oil til it hit the tip of the caliper set at the proper depth. Don't get scared and think the cap is gonna fly off, but have your hand cupped over it as you loosen it, as it is under a little compression. Good luck!
Oh yeah, just have a bunch of old newspaper around to lay the old springs on!
im ordering another brand spring kit, works performance, but i'm hoping the install is the same, seems simple and straight forward. and i read all about the prog drop-ins, they are supposed to require no oil level difference... supposed to, key words!
I was going to say the same, they have a great web site, mine came with 2 one inch spacers, you have to put it on a lift and get the weight of the front end
